Small London Bedroom Make-over

I've got myself a week off work and I'm going to attempt to overhaul my bedroom. I've not decorated it since buying the place as I've been concentrating on renovating the bathroom and livingroom. Now it's the bedrooms turn.

You can see from the floor plan it's anything but big.

In the room I also have a big wardrobe that ideally I'd like to keep as it's quite nice. I'm thinking I'll just antique paint the thing to whatever colour scheme is best.

The colours I'm thinking is a reall nice dark grey like F&B drainpipe and coupling that with highlights of mustard and white. But obviously being a small room I'm scared of it turning into a dark box.

I've attached some images that I love too.

Any thoughts would be awesome. I'll post work in progress throughout the week. I'm also looking for any space saving or storage suggestions with this layout.

Have you tried your bed with headboard centred on right wall ? Might free up space for more storage either side of bed .... Low on window side and taller on other side ?!

Love the colour combo ideas!

Drainpipe might be a bit on the dark side for the whole room, especially in gloomy weather. You could use that on the wardrobe and bed frame and use a lighter colour on the walls. Either Dimpse or Skimming Stone.

If you really wanted Drainpipe on the wall, you could do a feature wall on the right side of the room.

If you can't centre bed on the right wall, it may look better under the window (remove curtains & get white blind) with a chest of drawers in the corner and a mirror above.

What is the wardrobe used for? Clothes or stuff that could be stored elsewhere?

So after much deliberation I decided to ditch any colour on the walls and keep it white. family opinions were that it looks larger white. I've switched some of my design from my other bedroom over and the room will now have an ivory carpet (being fitted today and never walked on again! Lol) and has a theme of black & white stripes with gold and yellow accents. Hopefully it will be striking enough for a white walled room. Once the bed is up this week I will post some photos!

A photo would be great, thanks. My imagination is failing me! The chest of drawers is fine but I really just put it there instead of getting rid of it when we changed our main bedroom furniture. Was surprised to find it fitted perfectly! I don't think we could attach it to the wall where it is because it's just a paper thin partition to a wardrobe in the other room. It's pretty big for the room if we move it out the alcove.

I think ours is the same as the one I've pictured and it's been great. Both beds are slatted but they've been very sturdy. My son is 14 in 3 weeks time, and I would say he's outgrown it now but he's insisting it's still OK!! He's currently got a memory foam mattress on his and loves it. Initially we were looking at some sort of loft bed but I was always concerned if would dominate the room and make it dark. This was def a better choice for us in what looks like a similar sized room to yours (without alcoves).

I wonder if it is worth having the chimney breast removed if possible? Obviously you will need that checked out by a builder. Also I wonder if there’s room to place the bed against the middle of the left hand wall so the feet are facing the window? Good storage is key to a tidy room, so fitted wardrobes would be a great idea. You could get a carpenter to fit them and then paint them yourself to save money. White walls will certainly refresh the room but I think change the bedding to white as well, and then get a throw and cushions to add a bit of gentle colour. Yes the blind will certainly save space, either a simple blackout roller blind or a white wooden slatted blind would look smart. Online company Blinds2Go are very reasonable made to measure. Here’s a few pics to inspire you, one is grey but I thought it was nice. Could be livened up with mustard or burnt orange cushions and throw.

bet the Downpipe looks good with some crisp white bedding, a cosy knitted thrown in charcoal and some opulent splashes of mustard. sounds great- post some after pics please

That colour scheme looks pretty fab! My previous bedroom was similar dimensions (though narrower unfortunately!) the one space saving/storage item i found invaluable in such a small space was an ottoman bed. The hydraulic system allowed very easy access and it' was pretty amazing the amount you could store in there!

If you're going dark for the walls- wish I was as brave, but my hands are tied by the fact I'm getting free Laura Ashley curtains- can you go pale for the floor? I've just had white wood effect vinyl laid in my bedrooms and it looks fantastic. With pale bedding, curtains, reflective lights and mirrors you could make your room feel large and spacious whilst still retaining the cosy drama of the grey.
