POLL: Dark green - love or leave alone?

Marsala might just have been dubbed colour of the coming year, but for me, it's all about the earthy, inky shade that is dark green. We recently ran an Ideabook on how to work the colour into your home, but I want to know if you would or wouldn't.

So, get lost in the woods or stay far away, let us know if you love or loathe dark green!

Yes it probably makes the room look a bit darker. Yes, the room would probably look larger, if it was cream or white. Personally I really really like it. Classic but up to date. I am a bit of a green addict though...

I like it but in the right setting, and the room has to be big. In a Victorian type room it looks great. I once saw a furniture shop display with racing green wall and electric blue random objects and furniture, the contrast was superb.

Dark green in a small room or mixed with any other dull colours like burgundy, cream etc is a no no for me.

Each works for different rooms. Dark colours can add luxury - as they did for our dramatic makeover of a bedroom. The charcoal colour is elegant and calming in both winter and summer due to south facing windows. Light / off-white colours add to a contemporary aesthetic - especially in a cohesive look and feel within an open plan scheme or where it is necessary to draw attention away from a relatively low ceiling as was the case in this dining room we designed in a duplex apartment in the South of France. The problem further solved by low-back dining chairs.

Basements are a great way to add a feature space to your home, such as a games room or home cinema! Our Clients in London, mainly Clapham, South Kensington, Greenwich and Hackney love them as they can gain extra space without moving home. I'm highly allergic to lots of things, so the primary factor for me while choosing a cleaning product is whether it is hypoallergic and doesn't provoke my allergy. Most of hyppoallegic products available where I live also claim to be eco-friendly (yet, there definitely are some eco-friendly products which I am highly allergic to - like those containing natural orange extracts, etc). So, technically, I am using only eco-friendly products, but not for being green reson actually.

I used to be the same as Emma with bottle green for the same reason and have only just got over this! I love grass green, emerald and all the dark greens around ATM but the Pantone colour has just slightly too much yellow in for me although it would look great against charcoal

I am also a green addict and have it in some tone/ shade in almost every room in the house. I love how dark green cabinetry can look chic like black and also provide a beautiful connectivity to nature.

F and B Green Smoke looks great on one wall and up the stairs of my 1920s home. Sets off the white banisters beautifully.

What is it with these dull (as in it has grey/black in it) colours? Is it fashion or conservatism ... or maybe personality? This photo shows the heavy cupboards in a very bright room which doesn't work for me ... the colour and styles clash rather than complement. The colour also clashes with the rich lovely wood at the top of the window. It's often helpful when considering a colour to reflect how it appears in nature to understand how it makes us feel and not sure where I would find this in nature, and not in such a heavy solid way. For me green is about freshness and prefer to have actual plnts in the house to add green.

If it blends with your outside scene It will be timeless. Green is the most relaxing colour too.

I used to have a modern house and before I started decorating I was nervous about using a strong colour that I might have chosen for a Victorian property. In the end I painted the bedroom DHSlate (Dulux) and loved it. It is a dark colour but made white bedding look very crisp and was broken up with pale curtains and pictures on the walls.
We forget that a dressed room has half the wall space covered with furniture, doors, windows and pictures.

Dark green or blue Hallway cabinet, chest of drawers or table against a white wall.

Okay so whilst renovating our own place, me and my partner wanted to be in keeping with the building (1901) but also modern and fresh. When it came to opening up the old galley into a kitchen diner (which was definitely the right call - we love family and as my partner is Italian it is the hub of the house), much debate was had as to which colour to paint it. Eventually, having loved dark green forever, we settled on a ash fern green which everyone else happens to hate. We however love it and find it ties together with the oak work tops, rustic handles, hand picked stone tiles and even the high gloss large modern floor tiles ... Perfect for us, the house and who we are. Essentially that's all that matters... I can't say I've ever been to a dinner party at any one else's house and been perturbed by the terracotta on the wall?!?

Done well, like the pic, with good natural light etc it looks great ! Done badly and it could be a bit depressing !

I want to do my kitchen with dark green cupboards and lime green counter tops, with pink accents... I have green in every room (sometimes just as accents), as I find it to be a calming colour, but not as cold as blue...

Dark green looks great in the kitchen! It would work especially well with some natural wood, either in an island or as a contrasting cabinet. A wash of dark green, with the natural grain of the wood showing through, would also be a lovely but slightly more subtle way to play around with this colour scheme.
