Comments (49)Family traditions My grandparents from the 1930s until 1980s used to own a popular shop in a small town. Throughout this time my grandmother would increase her turnover every christmas by creating the most amazing handmade tree Angels and artisan crackers. From September until December it was a tradition of fairy and cracker making. I loved the glitzy fabrics, netting and bright tinsel that adorned the fairies. The cracker making was great fun the smell of the crackers when pulled was nothing like today. Just like Fortnum and Masons my grandmothers Christmas window display would be unveiled at the beginning of December, people would flock to buy her Angels and crackers. I never had one of the fairies and I often wonder if any are still in use today, I hope there is somewhere,in some ones home adorning a tree at the top loved by all as a tradition in memory of my grandmother. Sadly my grandparents are no longer here though the tradition of Christmas cracker pulling reminds me of the excitement and joy at Christmas pulling one of their crackers. Today nothing else cuts the mustard, even though I follow the tradition of making my own, of course I know what's inside. I hope my daughters and grand daughters will follow the family tradition in cracker making one day too. Peace and goodwill to all Ginny...See MoreShow us your Christmas tree!
Comments (60)Decorating the tree is always the beginning of something special in our house. Nothing eases the stresses and strains of planning like rummaging through the boxes looking for that special, favourite bauble. We all have our own and each of the children have theirs too. These 3 are my favourite; baby Jesus for our son James, white first Christmas bauble for our daughter Sophie and Rudolph for Mummy & Daddy. Merry Christmas everyone....See MorePOLL: Bungalow - love or loathe?
Comments (85)Yes that was one of the issues with our place. Narrow corridors, poorly lit. But by rearranging the access to key spaces, blocking some doors and creating a new double width doorway to the principle room, what was a narrow hallway is now integrated and useful. By converting the large loft, we now have a stairwell lit by two velux windows which also throw light into the heart of the building. Lastly the old underhouse garage is now a studio, glazed with full height blue-grey aluminium windows and a door. Our originally depressing, generic ittle bungalow on a sloping site has become a four bed live-work space on three levels that is beginning to feel more like our home...See MoreReal or Fake? What type of Christmas tree do you have?
Comments (6)We have one of each. The real on goes in the sitting room and is carefully decorated, all colour coordinated, and meticulously done by the wife. In the conservatory we have the fake one which is decorated by the kids - so it looks like a tinsel factory has exploded, baubles of all shapes/sizes/colours randomly bunched everywhere, flashing lights, tacky beads/bells. You can only make out a tiny bit of green tree under all the stuff (I absolutely love it, it's got so much character, but I'll still go in there any tidy it up a bit when the kids are in bed as most of it is only 'decorated' up to my waist height, so I do move some of it to the top 1/2 of the tree. Got to love the smell of a real tree as well...See MoreSonia Goul-Wheeker
