Hi Anita, thank you for your lovely comments. We do not use green oak on our orangeries based on the fact that the timber will move too much when it is exposed to changes in temperatures (heating internally) in this state and could cause breakages in the glass or encourage leaks. Instead, we season our own oak (allow the timber to dry out naturally) and select the most suitable timbers for each position, obviously it is a natural product so it will still move but it will have a lot less movement due to the fact the majority of the moisture in the centre of the beam should have already dried out. Orangery / flat roof external material - what's best?

I am building an orangery in the next few months. It measures 8.8m x 3.7m with a central glass roof lantern and a perimeter ceiling of approx 0.7m in width. I am at the stage of selecting the external roofing material that will lie on top of the perimeter ceiling area. I have been looking at a variety of materials, from plastic, rubber to metal, and there seem to be pros and cons with each. Would be very interested and grateful to hear from orangery (or flat roof building) owners or experts of their experiences and recommendations. The orangery is south facing so will endure direct sun and heat. Thank you.

Which side of your house would it face? If it is South it is a common problem for it to be too cold in winter and too hot in summer. Underfloor heating is great in garden rooms I'm not sure about orangeries. When we built our kitchen extension we had underfloor heating with a gas boiler and it was really warm in winter. It was exceptionally well insulated though.
