Long or short curtain

Hi
I'm planning to replace the curtains in the master bedroom which would originally have been an upstairs public room so is large. There is a radiator under the window in the bay and also a side window. It's going to take a huge amount of fabric but we don't actually close the curtains as we have roller blinds.
Would short curtains to sill level look odd in a room this size?
Also, it's a bit of a pain pulling 6 individual roller blinds up and down daily but we need them for privacy. Are there any other imaginative / energy and effort saving solutions for this bay window? Thanks

9 years agoI like very long curtains spreading over the floor. Chose thermal ones as my window is completely rubbish and there is no radiator under.
I love shutters and would like to get them for my bay window at living room and dress it with net linen curtains like that one from Ada & Ina

Comments (16)Hello Joelle, I see your'e being given some great advise and ideas!! If you can't find any suitable vintage wardrobes have you considered having fitted wardrobes - painted the same colour as the pale grey walls so they blend into the background - with small discrete knobs or no knobs/handles (a push opener). Long grey curtains either dark or light I think would look great and very hotel chic. When looking for suitable material don't forget to take a sample of your wallpaper with you to check which colours work best and then ask for samples of the material to take home to check at different times of day ad evening to see which looks best in different lights. I'd consider having the long curtains as 'dress' curtain with tie backs and fit either a roman or roller blind - for privacy, warmth and to keep the room as light as possible. Moving the sideboard to opposite the bed I agree is the best place and becomes the focal point of the room - also great to see when you're actually lying in bed. You could look on e-bay for a large vintage 1950's mirror perhaps frame less with beveled edge to hang above. The long mirror I'd lean on the wall left of the window. I love your grey head board. To add luxury I'd go for a white duvet and pillow cases and use the colours in the wallpaper for throw(s) and cushions. Again don't forget to always have a sample of wallpaper and curtain material with you when shopping for these. I really like the photo of the mid century bedside table you've posted - very much in keeping with your theme and would also look to buy a ceiling light and table lamps again from that period - perhaps on e-bay? Thanks for agreeing with me about shutting off the kitchen and snug :-D With regard the hallway, we did consider this, but opted for a toilet/cloakroom at the end because we need a downstairs WC. The stairs go upto a second floor and directly into a room with double doors(or will have) looking out over the sloping garden, so we think this will bring light and the illusion space into the hallway (hopefully). The small existing cloak/utility room on the top right, has to stay the size it is, due to it being a terrace house and conversations with neighbours/planners. Having said all that, it certainly good to get some fresh eyes on this, so I will certainly re-look at what we can do. Comments (13)It might be a good idea to get a builder to advise you about adhesives, or drilling into steel. I would imagine its difficult to drill into it, so you might need to hire a builder anyway. I was imagining a wooden batten that spans all the way across, sort of resting on top, but I suppose the bolts stick up a bit, so maybe that area would need to be carved out to accommodate the bolts. 9 years agoI agree you need to enhance the shape of the bay window and roman blinds would do that nicely. I just saw this image on instagram, I love the trim which adds a lovely touch of detail especially for a bedroom.

9 years agoHi tosca100, I have used both shutters (plantation style), Roman blinds and curtains in many of my projects and each lends a totally new look to the windows.
The shutters were used in a 1930s property and also a Victorian extension to a Georgian home they opened up the space in both making the windows appear bigger and uncluttered. They are not as 'cosy' as curtains but do retain heat in a room in fact they help the radiators to work more efficiently because there is no fabric blocking the heat emission.
A warm, cosy look can be easily attained using Roman blinds and dress curtains i.e. the curtains are not meant to be drawn - this look is quite theatrical (especially if using velvets etc) and look lovely if the right fabrics are used. This look goes particularly well with large windows, if you have a smaller room with corresponding window dress it lightly with roller blind and dress curtains. The photos show shutters in bedroom and living room.
Glad you are staying away from short curtains by the way :-)
