Staircase fabrication

Very neat stairs.
Who was the fabricator / installer?
Are they formed of folded metal with a timber trim. Is it self supporting.
Would like to see more detailed photos of this.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your kind words. Here are the details on the stairs:

Designed with HTS (Structural Engineers)

Metalwork: Max Creighton
Timber: Loveday Construction

Metal self supports between the ground floor slab and the first floor. The tail was brought to site in two parts and welded together, then the timber was installed.

Hi Am following this thread with interest - I have windows like this throughout my house and am finding it really difficult to decide on suitable treatments. On the upside it means the house always looks light and airy! We currently have a series of temporary roller blinds downstairs which work pretty well, but in the bedrooms we have curtains - although they now cover the radiators so not keen as a long term solution. Would also like to have blackout in the two main bedrooms. Does anyone know if extra wide roman blinds are available anywhere? We'd like an unfussy look. Suggestions and pics most welcome. Thanks.

Hi Laura, sounds like a great project. In terms of table size and number of lights, 3 to 4 is good. Lighting of the whole space should be considered. Being an open plan, you may want to have a combination of ceiling, wall and floor or table lights that can be used together or separately. This will give you an opportunity to create anything from ambiance lighting for a cosy evening to a bright working space should you need it. Having a glass staircase and pendants may prove to be too much. To soften the look, you could have a bespoke lampshade (we can advise on shape and size) in a fabric or even wallpaper of your choice. Having this light on a dimmer will make it a great entertaining spot. Let us know if we can be of further help. Good luck with your house renovations!

Dear Sandra, a budget of 10k is usually enough to design and build a really great looking feature staircase, my company has been dong so for about 10 years now, some of our work is shown on Houzz here: http://bit.ly/2oYjRFi , we are able to work in any material or combination of materials. We find that often the big cost of stairs is that associated with installation, if a design requires a lot of building in to the fabric of a house this can be time consuming and is often overlooked at the design stage. One way to over come the high price of installation is to opt for a design and flight that is fixed at the top and bottom only and not to the wall. Fortunately, whilst minimizing installation time and costs this can also lead to a more spectacular design that can be seen all round. From your post it sounds like you have seen a stair that you really like and it would help us comment on likely cost if you could put some images up. To minimise the chance of users slipping on the stair surface it is possible to apply non slip coatings but we usually advise clients for whom this is an issue to consider a textured wood surface or even grooves in the tread surface because for a coating to be effective it has to contain grit or tiny glass bubbles that detract from the overall appearance. In one recent project in Kings Cross we used inset stainless steel strips at the front of the steps to provide a contrasting nosing and non slip feel, this image shows the strips inset into solid oak with painted risers. Another recent project shown on Houzz: In this project we have matched the floors in the house with a brushed oak board which was then lacquered dark brown. Our customers were wary to begin with but after installation their concerns of slipping have been laid to rest. Hi Johnleh, just to try and explain a couple of points re;- protection of mild steel. Basically, Galvanising is dipping the components into a vat/ bath of hot molten zinc,( hence the hot dipped galvanised term. ) This coats the metalwork with a shiny/ mottled silvery finish, because this is zinc it will not corrode/ rust as unprotected mild steel would. This process is used quite commonly to give mild steel a longevity of life with a very minimal amount of maintainence. It can also be powder coated or painted on top to give another colour finish if desired. Galvanising is usally recommended in higher corrosive enviroments, such as coastal areas. If the metalwork is inland and in a less corrosive enviroment, powder coating ( this is where the metalwork is sprayed with a powder and statically sticks to the work prior to being "baked" in an oven. ) or traditional prime and paint can be used. Painted metalwork however would normally require more regular maintainence and can become awkward in the hard to get places.
