Awkward bottom step
Comments (17)Looking at the picture it appears that the whole staircase and wall are both skewed thus causing the very awkward angles involved. Clearly a major rebuild would be the perfect answer but I have a simple solution that will cost little and might be a temporary fix. Simply make the bottom step into a two thirds wide step (measured across the stair width) giving the full tread depth but only 66% of the width. To reduce the step height, make it two steps but you would need to be careful not to create a trip hazard from the downstairs doorway. You might consider adding a short extra handrail on the stair wall to the left looking up the flight. In fact just this week I saw a house with a very steep loft conversion staircase that had the full flight done in half steps so that you climbed each with a left/right/left/right step movement and it was called a "Hit and miss" staircase. I am not saying it looked a good idea as regards safety etc. but at least it got a staircase into a position where a conventional design would be even worse! As I said....a full rebuild is the best solution but the above might help short term and be better than trying to cope with that very narrow/disappearing first tread....See MoreFeature wall with hidden wine cellar entrance - aesthetic help needed!
Comments (23)Thanks all. Sorry it wasn't very clear before. I started mid through my renovation sentence as opposed to the full sentence! Whoops! Thanks for your input thus far. I've attached more photos which should hopefully give a proper visual. As Karen at One Plan (who are FYI amazing and downright beyond talented) rightly said it is a walk way so nothing protruding out is a viable option for the space. We're not sure what to do with the wall, hang photos, one off statement, hidden door, visual door, standard doors for the wine nook and something else wow on the wall? It's a big space and central to the rooms movement do something cool and stylish and modern but workable. We just want what looks Amazing! Has a cool wow factor but practical. My other half was thinking a sliding door too Karen but I thought it may restrict walking space when it was open? Please give us your best design suggestion. Comments (13)If you are going for a step then I think there would need to be an obvious difference between the two levels. Would just one step be an obvious separation between the two rooms? Could it be increased or would this be too expensive in terms of digging out? I love the steppes areas in a large open plan room which gives a nice separation. However if it's not too obvious a difference then keep to one level and just use rugs or see through wall features/storage to separate them....See More1930's semi needs new kitchen, plumbing and layout help please!
Comments (3)Hi Rosey, Hope these answers help: There are plenty of different ways you could redesign the space so it would be good to get really clear on what you want to base designs on. For the drains this is not that unusual, and is likely to mean that it is a shared drain, so it's owned by your water utility company. This might be worth checking. Yes any raised external platform / patio would need planning permission and may be refused on the grounds of overlooking and reducing the neighbours privacy. I am running my Free 5 Day Get Ready to Redesign Challenge in a few weeks. You will find this useful because I created it to help people in the situation that you are in - feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to start. So if you'd like to join in that you can do that here: https://www.i-architect.co.uk/readytoredesign.html I hope this helps! Jane, i-architect.co.uk...See MoreMZK Home Improvement & Roofing
