HI Sarah I love what you have achieved. Many congrats for embracing what you have and creating something that totally enhances the placement of the fireplace. The space looks like it was made for the placement of that perfect chair and you've done a gorgeous job with your selection and placement of art . I am moving with considerable grief from my gorgeous arts and crafts bungalow to an early1970s small house. I have to say this style of architecture in NZ wasnt exactly a highlight. But I set myself a challange to embrace the architecture and look to enhance rather than fight it . That challenge shifted me off my despair track and now I am excited and hopeful and thinking about space and colour and the amazing light pouring in (a quality of houses of this time)..and textures . i feel so cteative in new and diffetent ways...and it's so exciting. seeing what you have achieved - it is very affirming for me I love what you have created.

your welcome from my experience you are always starting again with homes as styles and you change so you will have a head start. I'm always changing things with paint and reinventing rooms but over the years found that the classics especially if originals like yours will always stand the test of time and never go out of style but they dont have to look dated mix it up. if you tire of the carpet which I love think about making it into a huge rug bounded around the edge with what ever colour adorns your walls then would look stunning on a wood floor same with the sink could always be used in another room I would team it with black or even faux marble back drop oh endless fun and NOT AVAILABLE on the high street enjoy your home always

I would say the first is original and is likely cast iron and not wood. There are probably many layers of paint built up disguising the fact. This can be stripped with Nitromorse and then polished up with a metal brush on a drill. This will give you a polished iron finish which will rust if left. Then you need to decide whether to re paint or to use a 'black lead' polish which will retain that lustrous metal sheen. The second surround looks a bit cobbled together to me. The original was likely also to be cast iron, perhaps got damaged. This does look like timber but the design has odd proportions and could have been a later addition.

That looks more like a 1930s fireplace. We had the same in our living room and bedrooms. My OH removed the bedroom ones and boarded them up as space was tight. The one in the living he opened it up after getting advice from my builder brother. He then proceeded to clean up the bricks. We then added a Sandstone hearth and a wooden surround we bought from B & Q. If you want original Victorian then worth looking on eBay or Gumtree. I’m sorry I’ve no idea of costs if you have to employ someone to do this. Our surround was £99 many years ago and the sandstone paving is not expensive.
