What would deter you from buying a house?
Comments (35)We bought our house 15 years ago with an open mind but wanting some minimum basics - white bathroom suite and separate loo, kitchen / diner or scope to have one, 4 bedrooms, large - preferably bay - window for Christmas tree and a cat-flap. We got a Victorian fixer-upper - 5 bedrooms, a space for a kitchen diner (had to move some plumbing and gas into it and convert old kitchen into utility), lovely 11ft high ceilings, gorgeous tall bay window, cat-flap into the utility, wood-burning stove - on the road parking (oops) and it was in local guide books and sometimes a walk-around tour! I walked into the place with an open mind and immediately loved the atmosphere, it felt like home. High ceilings and off the road parking would be priorities next-time though, we love our high ceilings and everyone who visits us does too....See MoreCould this ugly house ever be a dream home?
Comments (47)I love a challenge, I would extend the garage to the full width of the property. Re-position the front door to the center with a window and a contemporary wide door as shown. Next I would remove all the hanging tiles and render as picture. For a full contemporary look change the windows to a dark grey profile. This will create internally a larger entrance, giving the owner more internal space, keep it open plan! I cannot see any images of the existing interior to advise a room layout. The back of the property looks rendered....I love the balcony, which I am hoping is off a living room??? Again if within budget replace the existing windows with dark grey profile, put dark grey bi folds where the sliding doors are at present, extend the patio by 1.5 meters, to allow for external seating area......keep it minimal. Spray the existing railings dark grey. A couple of strategically placed large pots with topiary trees.........Your Done!...See MoreWhich room in your home have you spent the most money on?
Comments (10)Totally agree, Christopher Brummit. I persuaded a friend that the place for her kitchen was not in the one room overlooking the garden - which is where it was when she bought the house - but in the middle with the dining room at the front (with a fireplace) and the sitting room at the back with a gorgeous view. I also think it's worth thinking about the dining room's location. In my 1927 house, it's meant to be at the back which means it overlooks the garden. Meanwhile, the sitting room overlooks the road. I swapped and couldn't be happier especially as the room at the back is much bigger. Shake it up is what I do!...See MoreClimbers on the exterior of your home - dream or nightmare?
Comments (15)Climbing plants - including evergreens although not Ivy - can successfully be used on buildings and can look beautiful. My two top tips would be to choose the plant well, make sure it is fairly low growing so you can control it and secondly erect wires using vine eyes, tensioners and wire so that the plant has a definite framework to grow on and you can keep it away from windows and doors. We use the Gripple system shown below....See Moreaudreywills
