Coving? Is it contemporary? Is it necessary?

We are renovating a house and wondered if we need to bother with coving at all ?

Would it look odd if it was just in some of the rooms ? eg. In the lounge and dining room but not in the hall ?
Or not upstairs?

We are looking to create a modern contemporary feel and wondered if coving is old fashioned? Or dated?

Coving adds substance to walls in the sitting room and dining rooms but I wouldn't put it elsewhere myself

I wouldn't say it was outdated at all. Sure there are coving designs that are quite traditional/vintage but there are lots of lovely modern ranges out there too!

Hi there, Ah ditto with the 60's house! We seem to have a mix of either rooms with no coving or rooms with plain coving. My father wants me to replace it all with decorative ornate coving, but I feel that with the age & style of the house, a plain one looks less out of place and more elegant. Of course it's down to personal taste. The dining kitchen off our through lounge doesn't have any and I'm contemplating not putting it in at all. Not sure if this would look odd or not, but we had bi-folds in and it's quite a contemporary room so doesn't need it (if that makes sense) Another thing to consider is the height of the ceiling. Ours feel quite low and coving makes the walls shrink even more. If you have at least a good standard height then you could get away with them.

And where the tree of life was, we have the beginnings of a gallery wall, though I don't have a pic yet. We're looking at getting a white wood-burning stove where the fireplace is, getting rid of the fireplace completely, just having a brick-lined opening for the stove to fit in. Any thoughts?

We have an external chimney so flat wall inside, we just painted using masking tape to create a feature - we get lots of comments on how nice it looks. It is clearly the feature, not the tv. Maybe add a bookcase on one side? Re fire, I would just replace the actual surround with something new and modern, we saw lots of nice stone options when we were looking, then reinstate open fire (not a clue how easy/ costly this is!)

I have it in my lounge but nowhere else in the house. It was there when we moved in.

It depends on the house- if it is a period house then it will be expected when you come to sell.
A very modern building does not need coving but to get a very contemporary feel the plaster finish needs to be flawless with a clean line between the ceiling and walls.
The purpose of coving, door architrave and skirting boards is to hide imperfections where one plaster surface ends and a different surface starts.
There are several different types of coving- choose one with the right proportions for the rooms. Coving doesn't just have to be for the front room.

I dunno in respect of selling as I live in a council house but I really do think it improves the look and finish of a room if you do it sympathetically. It's an absolute pain to do yourself, as I know from experience but really worth the effort and worth taking time over.
