I would like to change the exterior of my boring 70s town house

Wall to wall white pvc windows with white plastic fasia in between. Integral garage (white door), Porch to the left. The photos is the rear of the houses but it gives you the general idea.

I rather like your facade. I would think twice about painting the brickwork, as this would be a maintenance headache, but cleaning it would brighten it up. Otherwise stucco and paint the front ( brickwork) only? i would clad your existing canopy in lead, but leep the existing shape. Is the tarmac yours? If you could change this to something lighter and softer, this would have a really big impact. Clad the stairs in slate or indian sandstone, get rid of the block screen and replace with glass, ( marine grade stainless steel fittings and door furniture) black iron railing for the steps.

Paul. I don't know whereabouts in the country you are but this is a company in my area who seem to have done quite a few contemporary upgrades and face lifts.They have extended a couple of properties on nearby streets. We are thinking of using them at some point. I have no connection with them whatsoever and I cannot 'recommend' them as such but their website and the work I have seen looks to be of a good standard.

Hm... it's a tricky one - I can't see that fancy windows or replacing the cladding would make it much better. I think the problem with the looks is more down to the shape of the dormers and the house in general + it's proportions rather than the materials used on the outside. The porch won't help in the looks department either. I think you're doing what you can - keeping it clean and tidy - and the grass looks very well maintained. I would just try to accept the outside and concentrate my efforts on making the interiors extra pretty.

Hi Shazadi, lots of window companies will offer a supply only service where they will make the windows for you and send them up and you arrange the fitting with a local installer. That way you can use a company to fabricate the that isn't necessarily in your area. A good company should be able to advise you on the design of the windows and what will suit your house most. Don't discount timber windows too quickly however, there have been a lot of innovations in the area and they are carbon neutral, very thermally insulating and with the right paint work or finish can last for a long time without much maintenance.
