What to do with living room?

We've not long moved into a new home & although we've done a few things (new flooring for example) the room is relatively blank canvas but we just don't know where to start in bringing some colour and warmth into the room. Any suggestions would really be appreciated regarding any aspect, furniture, colours, textiles, lighting, we are just really struggling with it all!

You need to start with a base colour, or a favourite item like a cushion or picture and then build a design around it.

Like the navy and white in the picture below.

Thank you, yes it would work as there is nothing the other side of the wall. Where the arch is, would you have a solid wall or a glazed double door - living room window is west facing and shutters are great for privacy but make the room look dark. I don't even know how expensive it would be to do something like that?

Hello Suzanne, I'm late to the party but I wanted to go against the grain on this thread and suggest a built-in. I feel it would elevate your space. Bringing a level of refinement from being custom to your room's height and width, it would also give you the opportunity to personalise it to your style. You could make it a feature, a show stopper, the pièce de résistance of your living room and home :) As a work-in-progress example, a client of mine with a love of Edwardian interiors asked me to refurbish her home. Part of this included creating a design for an underwhelming looking wall with a fireplace. So I did this - before photo also attached. I cannot wait to go back to the property and take photos of the finished product with all my furniture recommendations. I hope I have provided food for thought. Help please with what to do w/ living room alcove

My first though was to fit a door to the smaller alcove on the right with shelves if needed, for example for the printer, and the other side on the left could take shelving but fit a door at the bottom for hidden storage. It’s something a carpenter could do as I doubt you would get the right sizing off the shelf.

Yes, open plan can be attractive. It depends on what you are planning, is it to sell or are you living in the house? They way it currently is, means you have to always go through the living room to get to kitchen which makes for a busy corridor. You could maybe make it a single glass door, this would extend your options in the kitchen. I love a black industrial type door 😍
