Should I paint the cabinets in the kitchen?

This is the kitchen of a studio flat. I was just thinking that oak cabinets turn the space smaller so what about painting them in white?

Painting them white isn't going to make the space bigger and it won't make it much brighter either, because they are already a light colour. Unless you get these refinished professionally, I doubt that painting them yourself will be an improvement. Is this a dark room at night? If so, I'd try to bring in more lighting. Even just a wall sconce on the wall to the left of the window could add some light and interest here. This actually looks like a very pleasant space and I like how the wall has been used for pot-storage. A magnetic strip could be installed on the stove wall for knives and other accessories too. But to answer your question, no I do not recommend painting these cabinets.

Hi there. Completely agree with everyone, you should paint the cupboards. I really like the colours in this picture as I think that the slightly 'greyer' off white cupboards would tie in well with your beautiful grey tiles. You wouldn't necessarily have to go so light on your worktop as in this picture. The laminate you showed in your third picture is really nice, where is it from? Currently doing my kitchen and trying to find a laminate that I like!

Hi Tacey, The clean white form of the kitchen looks lovely, its a nice room. You definitely need lights above the wall units, this will bounce off the ceiling and into the room. At the risk of being too direct, throw the green paint away, you don't need it.. If you want colour in this room use the glass display cabinet and put some beautiful coloured glass in there. I sometimes put Japanese inspired flower arrangements on the middle of islands to add a modern structure and punch some colour in. The advantage to both of these methods is that you can change the colour scheme when ever you like. One idea that would transform the room: Put an American shutter up on the window. White with wide 80mm slats. Make sure the slat control is concealed, don't let them sell you a shutter with that awful rod down the middle. This will look amazing in this room. If you really fancy being adventurous mirror the window wall around the shutters above the splash back. You will need to make templates and have the mirror cut to those to ensure a perfect fit. Visually the room will double in size as your eye is tricked into seeing the furniture repeated as a reflection. I know it sounds a little "out there" but I have done this on many occasions and it works amazingly well. Hope that helps, Martin - www.angel-martin.com

It sounds like you have plenty of natural light coming in so should be fine with most things. I think the blue all over would be a little too much with north light - making it feel a little cool. I would go with the suggested half and half which will also lift the height a making it feel more open. With the blue itself I would try to go for something with as warm an undertone as possible.. same with any whites you choose. If they have blue or grey undertones they will feel a look more drab with the specific light that's hitting them. It sounds like you're going to have a fab space! :)

I was once told that you shouldn’t have more than 2 types of wood in only one space. The floor looks lovely and I’d be tempted to paint all the wooden furniture so that they read as a matching set. Rather than make them a ‘feature’ with a bright coloured paint, I’d push them into the background using a white wooden stain or antique white cracked paint. Add a toughened glass top to help reflect daylight giving protecting to the paint. If budget allowed, I’d be tempted to invest in a neutral coloured rug bringing more daylight into the room. It could be look very sophisticated!

I have The same color in my kitchen and I am planning to paint the top ones in white and the bottom in light gray...to combine with the black top...have a special cupboard paint in gloss or I was also thinking in use adhesive contact gloss for kitchen door and you can find in amazon and comes in a roll and you can cut to size...

Mmmm, thanks for the comments! I like the idea of gloss paint in white and then light grey. I need to check the floor tiles though, they are like a bit orange
