Lighting for Open Plan Living space with raked ceiling?

Please help! We are building a new house with an open plan living area that has a raked ceiling up to clerestory windows, which will incorporate both lounge and dining. In terms of lighting the space, we are considering alternatives to downlights, as there isn't much of a roof cavity. Any thoughts on wall or uplighting would be a great help!

Thanks for the ideas all, certainly given me some food for thought. @Rinqcreation, your house looked amazing! Can I ask how you changed the colour in the photo posted? Was it via some flash autocad software or something easy I can do myself? Looking at your photo i'm thinking maybe that shade is a bit too dark as you suggested. Maybe a few shades lighter would look good; going to have to put some test shades on the wall I think. Good idea about waiting through the seasons, but the thing is we have a very young family (2 year old twins + 6 year old) and if we don't get the decorating done before we move in we never will!!!!!!!!

It could be an idea to demarcate the kitchen using the floor, rather than by using furniture - the easiest and cheapest way would be a rug of suitable material. If the area is demarcated there isn't as pressing a need to put something there, like an island or table. It also preserves the sense of open space - you said the room was small overall, so it's important not to crowd it with furniture. Then the furniture you do have can be spaced out, so you can have a larger sitting area. A round table would be good in the corner by the door. Round because as Minnie said it takes less space. A glass table would be best as it is see-through and preserves a sense of space. Round is also good because it adds softness - the rest of the room is going to have square or rectangular lines to it. The dining table could also be the desk. An alternative would be a coffee table in the sitting area that converts into a desk - if you google "coffee table and desk" you will see some really cool examples. I don't know how to copy and post the images, so you will have to search it, sorry! Corner TV - I have the same problem. I'm considering a wall mount. This saves space, but you do have to consider the wiring, and where to put digital boxes etc. Good luck!! Show us some after pics?

We are planning an open plan kitchen extension, however we find it difficult to design the lighting for the room as it is quite big and consists of 3 separate zones (kitchen, living room & dinning room). I attach a diagram to demonstrate the issue: We are not keen in filling the ceiling with spotlights other than the kitchen area to provide the necessary light. We are keen in having nice hanging lights above the island but other than that we do not know how/where to light the rest of the room. Thank you in anticipation.

I'm good on ideas, but haven't got a clue about structurals or costs! I've found daydreaming doesn't cost a lot, except time..... tab's idea to incorporate pillars into the kitchen would create the open kitchen diner and the pocket doors could be the way to keep the living seperate but together with the function area. Would be interested if it increases your cupboard space or if just opening a section provides more storage capacity. Although the play area is part of the way of living presently, that time will pass so I would hesitate to put in a wall you may only want to remove later. An open divider, like an open shelf unit would allow you to keep the play area out of the visuals, then the space could move into a second 'gaming' area or study area as little ones get bigger
