Stopping the dog going on the grass

Few reasons for this, we have cream carpet and the mud is getting shocking, also we have a child now and don't want poo all over the garden for when he is a toddler
I'd like to maybe put a fence of some sort but be able to move away or fold away when needed

Is there anything out there like this?

I thought I'd update everyone as to what we settled on as most of you won't have seen the finished post. Went went for Little Greene French Pale Grey on the walls and then a Grey Quartz worktop which had worked quite well. To stop it from being clinical, we opted for some textured wallpaper in the dining area which is Bala Storm (I think) from John Lewis. We then added some natural tones using a wooden table, and then Vitra chairs. Along with wooden fruit bowl etc. The main window will have wooden venetian blinds, and the bay windows will probably be done in a darker grey material as the perfect fit style blinds you find in conservatories

I only remove fresh items from fridge but leave jars etc I tidy but don't clean I usually put fresh linen on bed day before we leave so come back to a nice bed I arrange all the blinds / curtains so open but not fully open I set all the light timers I leave a key with neighbours and let a SMALL number of neighbours know As we are about to leave I put bleach in all the toilets If it is a taxi firm we don't know ( try to use same one each time) as I leave I talk to and wave at imaginary children and then discuss imaginary children with husband when we set off "will they remember to ...hope they visit .....etc" As we are about to leave I put bleach in all the toilets

Whenever we can travel abroad by car the cat comes with us and he is happy to face the trip. Otherwise we are blessed with wonderful neighbours who love our cat and look after him when we go away, once or twice a year. They do not feel confident to let him wander in the garden in case he returns late or not at all, so he is forced to stay at home for 2 weeks, sigh! Travelling from the UK and back with a cat is a nightmare due to vaccinations and restrictions of means of transport. On the other end in continental Europe our cat can even come on a plane with me. When planning for a holiday I always visit https://www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad/overview hoping some restrictions have been waived but not much difference so far. I'd love to have a rescue dog as well but the complicated arrangements have the better of me. Otherwise, for shorter periods, I leave the cat with my husband and viceversa. Pets are our responsibility, they give us immense joy and I do not suffer for making sacrifices.

Lol. My dog also loves to dig up freshly planted things, I tend to put a cage around them till the roots have established. I think plants would be wonderful, just remember not to raise the existing soil level around the base of the tree too much as it could be harmful to the tree. In this situation I think you need shallow rooted plants. Here’s some suggestions that would look nice and also be beneficial to the trees. Spring flowering bluebells (always look nice under trees) Bergenia and Lily of the valley, summer flowering nasturtium, comfrey, dill, fennel plus many more. Nasturtiums and comfrey are particularly beneficial as they draw aphids away from fruit trees and also provide winter mulch for the roots and they’re really easy to grow, pop in a few seeds in early spring and you’ll have a riot of colour come summer.

Hi no I don't want to section it off perminatly, I'm after something that fold away or along them lines

The fences was here when we moved in, sorry

The bottom section that is boarded off is where our pond is that we in the middle off filling in, hence the boards lol

Where will your dog do his business f he isn't allowed on the grass. I have a section of my garden which is fenced off that has bark in it and a tree stump so my dog can go do what he needs to do and not affect the grass at all.

Well he has done poos etc on the decking so I was going to say on there. But thinking about wee would prob over time rot my decking

Ok, I'm confused. You want a dog, but you don't want the mess of a dog? Not possible. You committed to the dog for life, you need to provide it with a happy environment for life regardless of how many children you bring into the world. I don't know what kind of dog you have or how old it is, but dogs are rather easily trained to utilize specific spots for defecating and urination. I've seen people put in an area marked off by bricks, etc, put in faux hydrant or something similar if you have a male dog, and used positive re enforcement to get the dog to utilize this area, specifically. No fence needed. Speak with your Vet or a dog behaviorist on how to do this.

Your child is a baby. You can apply the same positive re enforcement to keep your son out of the dog's personal area. Give them both some credit for their intelligence!

Responsible pet ownership involves responsible pet owners. You allowed your dog to utilize any area it wanted to, now it's your job to re train your dog to utilize an appropriate area. It would have been easier if you'd done this when the dog was a puppy.

Setting limits for both your pet and your child are the pet owner's and parent's responsibility. You need to take some ownership in the world you've created and stop looking for easy fixes. Will re training of both always work? No. Live through those moments and move on. Mistakes happen. It's part of life. If this is too much to accommodate, you have no business owning a dog or having children. You're an adult, act like one.

You can buy bamboo fencing from b and q which is a concertina effect. That way you can stretch it out when you need it, then it folds back very easily to a tiny size. Thee is no reason you couldn't try something like that as aesthetically it is quite attractive. It's not very sturdy though, so not sure how you would hold it in place.

As for the above comments, this is not a forum for debating on training dogs and raising children. I think those comments were rather unwarranted! As someone who has a dog running mud through our house daily, whilst building works are done in our garden...I feel your paw-print pain! Good luck with your dog, your toddler and your garden!

Well, think about it Danny. Nothing makes me angrier than a person who minimizes their own responsibility in a situation. Fences? That's your solution? Nothing about the fact that you allow your dog to pooh on your deck vs the ground? Really?

Ok, CHILL. that'll get you through all your dog and child issues. Good to know. Responsibility and creating a world where both your child and your dog's behavior is acceptable to others does not enter into things..... noted, and stepping away from the conversation.

Hi - What you could do is put a fence along the left hand side of the garden and put a large gate facing where the picture was taken. I think grass is a better option for dogs but you could choose to put bark down as suggested above.

You also said that mud is an issue. I have found that a steam cleaner is extremely useful and one of the best buys I've ever made.

Wouldn't it just be easier and less expensive to train the pet owner? An area outdoors for washing off the mud could easily be made by adding a dual faucet that includes both warm and cold water for rinsing off the dog.

The pet owner is also a parent - as a parent you need to make sure that your child is safe at all times! No parent would want their 2 year old coming into their kitchen with dog poo on their hands, clothes, etc.

So now 2 year olds are ok to be unsupervised in the yard and the dog owner is not responsible for picking up the poo and putting it in an appropriate place so that neither child nor adult walks in it? Interesting.

You can get temporary fencing. Try googling 'outback run for small pets'. Depending on the size of the dog, you may need to buy several of these so it is not a cheap option.

Artificial grass is great for dogs as it solves the mud issue and can easily be hosed off to keep it clean.

Hi Danny,

I understand your issue with dog mud on cream carpets. I've had dogs all my life. We've also always had cream carpets which, in my eyes, is a ridiculous idea for my family because if it's not the muddy dog ruining the carpet, it's a family member spilling tea and coffee!

It seems like you want less hassle/less cleaning. Honestly? Get an easily cleanable floor. If you think the muddy dog is the issue, just wait until your child is moving and throwing food/being sick/god knows what!

Tony's images are great - it seems like covering the pond might be a great opportunity to make this a "dog" area. I can see a small path on the left hand side of your garden, maybe you could widen this and have it leading towards an area with bark/grass. I definitely wouldn't recommend letting your dog do its business on the decking. Not only will it damage the wood, but it's an area where everyone will walk, so stepping in poo is inevitable!

As a quick fix for the mud on carpets - pop some old towels on the floor near the entrance to the garden. Every time your dog comes in with muddy paws, use the towel to wipe off the excess mud. As for the poo, where ever your dog poos it will need to be picked up, so no fix for this! From experience, my dogs have always found an area in the garden they like to poo in. We just keep checking it every now and then.

I have to admit, it seems a little sad to think the dog wouldn't mix with the family in the garden, as my childhood was so enjoyed having our dog in the garden with us. But this is YOUR house, and whatever works best for you is the answer. Good luck/let us know what you decided.

Got it done in the end, pond filled in and labeled out garden with new grass laid

Still get little patches where she wee's not bad but they are they
So any ideas or products that are great at bringing your grass back to green, be appreciated

I've heard you can buy something from pets at home to pop in the water which helps neutralise the dogs urine making it less likely to burn the grass. They look like pebbles and you put it in the dogs bowl. I haven't read all the comments above so sorry if this has already been said.

A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in the water bowl of mixed with food will stop pee burns on the lawn. If you buy the ACV with the mother even better, that has tons of health benefits for the pet too.

There is a product called Dog Rocks which is a type of stone. You place a couple in the dog bowl and replace them after a period of time. It is a natural product and is apparently harmless. It does work as I have used it in the past. I am between dogs at present but would use them again.
