Original Victorian oak staircase

We are moving to grade II listed town house and don't like the high gloss finish or colour on staircase. It would be sacrilege to paint, any ideas please?

Hi. It would be a little sacrilegious to paint the whole thing as its good quality oak with some age by the looks of it. i would suggest you paint the spindles, baserail and the visible tread and have the handrail and newel posts rubbed down and polished dark black / brown this is a classic but far more current look that will work well. Also the spindles would be extremely laborious to rub fully back to bare and re-polish in situ.

I agree, there would originally have been just one cast iron spindle per stair. The newel post would have been wooden I think and you'll be able to pick up a new, traditional style pine one from any timber merchant, probably less than £100. It's a shame that the 'bullnoses' have been cut back but if it was all sanded down and painted or varnished to blend in I don't think it would look wrong at all. The alternative is to get a joiner to make up bullnose profile pieces to attach to the end of each tread, but you'd have to paint them as the wood wouldn't match the original. Replacing every tread would cost a fortune. The banister rail will sand down with a bit of hard work and probably be a nice piece of wood underneath that you can varnish. It'll look lovely once it's done, you'll have to post 'after' picture for us!

Just a thought! For your first floor if you wanted to then it looks like there might be potential to create a more central bathroom on the landing and make the current bathroom, or part of it, into an ensuite for the back bedroom (number 3 on the plan). Not sure if a bedroom with ensuite and an extra bathroom is something you'd like to have, but it looks like this might be an option. Useful if you want a guest bedroom with an ensuite, or have teenage children who spend ages in the bathroom! I imagine you have the front bedroom as the masterbedroom, and it doesn't look so possible to create an ensuite for that room without taking space off the bedroom. Might be something worth considering. Having an ensuite is the second most frequently requested alteration that I get asked for. It would be worth asking your estate agent if doing this would improve the potential resale value of your home - if this is something you're interested in.

Hey Sarah, I did a quick blog to explain period features back in October https://www.ovololondon.co.uk/new-blog/2019/10/15/a-quick-guide-to-period-features Did you know they were actually called dwarf rails before dado rails? Naturally I will be biased and lean towards keeping the dado rail. I love features which add character to a building, after al that is why we purchase period properties. Hopefully you see lots of pictures here to inspire you. You can add wall panels and picture rails if you wanted to go 'full period features' but that can be a bit overbearing for some. Best of luck!

The stairs have come up pretty well after the years of paint have been removed so thinking of doing the threads a dark walnut/mahogany colour so a matching handrail would be ideal. The hallway has a black and white tiled art deco floor so was going to do the panelling in something like FB Purbeck Stone / Manor house Grey and then the wall on top of the panelling something like FB ammonite. This staircase has been a project of mine so want to have a go myself at the restoration of the handrail but not sure where to start since I've never done it before but then I've learnt so much since doing the house and tbh - if it all goes wrong I can still just paint over but id rather not. Not sure what products to use - any you tube videos to recommend that I could use to learn from? Biggest worry is fixing the chips and dents and making the repairs look invisible.
