Advice on Kitchen Worktop

In my Kitchen I have a Belfast sink and wooden work tops,
I love the sink and would like to keep it, but need to replace the wooden work tops because the drainer section has succumbed to water damage,
Can any one offer suggestions on other materials I can use instead of wood ( wich needs a lot of caring for) OR granite (wich is expensive )

If you really can't stretch to granite /stone/composite worktops then maybe consider raising your sink so that it sits about 10mm higher than worktop height (maybe use a piece of the old wood worktop under the sink to raise it ) and use normal laminate worktops with sealed ends and silicon sealant around the edges ... It's cheaper - and if you make sure you seal the cut edges well it should last for a good few years - and long as you don't drown it in water too much !

Seams/joints might be more prominent in a natural product over a composite - not a problem if you have none - but another consideration if you do !

I had a similar dilemma and have chosen solid laminate or compact laminate. Pricewise it sits halfway between laminate and quartz. I couldn't justify quartz and to be honest I didn't like the look or the join you get. Due to COVID I haven't got to the install point so I can't advise any further but I am attracted to the slim profile which makes it look quite different and modern in comparison to my current laminate.

A 20mm gap is far to much to have as the upstands are only 20mm thick, if the fitters tried to fit the upstands to the walls then it would slip down the back. The overhang of the worktop to the front of the cabinets, depending on the depth of the cabinets, should be between 30-40mm all round, be worthwhile checking this out. When you say the tap doesn't fit easily, is it that the hole is to small (35mm) or does the tap hit the upstand. I assume the kitchen (base units at least) were all in place and fitted before templating and haven't moved between template and worktop installation. I think the fitters have tried to make the best out of a bad job and something went wrong in either templating or fabrication. Your supplier should still have the physical templates so I'd definitely go back to them. There's always a bit of filling to be done between the upstands and the wall with decorators caulk as no wall is flat and upstands don't bend. Modern dob and dab walls are some of the worst i've seen. Hopefully its decorators caulk and not silicon thats been used.

Thanks very much for your help. The house is a Victorian terrace and the kitchen is a L shape. Very lucky that I haven't done yet , just looking. I decided to get a two bowl ceramic sink because the sinks now are too small really, I want something I can use for others things as well and I'm in love now with that big sink . The worktop just check hundreds of photos and like Daysi England here suggest Marble design, (I cannot afford a granite or silestone) be matching the shaker cabinets better. All the kitchen be same cabinet color . .... and yes, I don't intend do remodelation for at least 15 years! . Im open to more opinions.

Depending on your budget another option is the Granite Transformations product a 6.5mm thick solid surface with a material life time guarantee that is designed to fit on top of your existing worktops.
Although, as you have wood worktops which need to be allowed to breathe, we would need to remove your existing wood worktops and replace them with a new substrate. All of this could be done in just one days and usually costs between £2 - £4 thousand pounds. If your budget allows this is definitely the way forward.
