Your thoughts on steam ovens?

We're having a great discussion on another thread about the Nutribullet, people are offering some really good advice!

...Which made me think of other kitchen gadgets and appliances. For instance, steam ovens, how many of you have in on your home? What do you think of it? Is it a kitchen essential?

I know three people who have had a steam oven costing £1000.00 in thier new fitted kitchens and two of them never use them! Hope this helps .

Emmeline, it will depend on whether your shower unit is already fully enclosed. If it is then, including the installation of steam and purchase of steam generator, you would be looking at around £3500. If it isn't then one would have to pay for the shower unit to be enclosed properly as well.

IKEA Kulinarisk ovens - are they a good buy?

We’re re-doing our kitchen and dithering over the choice of new cooking appliances. We’re replacing a double oven, and are very tempted by the notion of combining IKEA’s pyrolitic-function Kulinarisk oven with their smaller steam oven (also Kulinarisk). In terms of sheer bang for your buck they seem (on the face of it anyway) to offer value that would cost twice as much with any more familiar brand. On the one hand we have no experience at all of large IKEA appliances; on the other we know that the ovens are actually manufactured by well-regarded mainstream manufacturers – and (not to be sneezed at) come with a five year guarantee. The Kulinarisk with pyrolitic function was even awarded a Which “Best Buy” when it was reviewed there. Does anyone have any experience with either oven?

Lofra do a gorgeous double oven mini range in 70cm other in gas or indiction hob. I know this as like you I was desperately searching for something of that size. In the end we jiggled the layout around and went with the same model but in the 90cm width. It's a beautifully made, very efficient range that looks incredibly good too. As it is a utility/mud room, we will have: Washing machine, dryer, American fridge/freezer, boiler, mega flow tank, recycling bins, kids bikes, shoe rack, coats (on hooks). The main thing I don’t want is for the kitchen/open plan area to lose its “wow factor” but then is 650mm (according to the architect) going to make that much more difference?

I really like steam ovens they cook food with lots of flavour and keep in all the nutrients. As most people have never used one they tend to be a bit afraid of the unknown so it is worth spending a bit more for a good manufacturer who will also show you how to use it so you get the most out of it. Basically if you think of the foods you cook on the hob these can be done in a steam oven often all at the same time as there is no smell transferance. It can also be used as an alternative to reheating in a microwave as it is great for refreshing left overs.

Steam ovens not that great but a Combination Steam Oven is a must . You get all the steam oven benefits plus so much more! I love my Siemens one . Fab Appliance. Best crackling on earth ;)

Also Miele and Gaggenau offers free demonstrations on how it really works.

I have a Miele combi steam oven and use it a lot. Vegetables and potatoes have so much more taste, even without salt which I never add when steaming. Also perfect for rice and cooking eggs. Bread baked with added steam is perfect. Also, pre baked baguettes and such baked with added steam are crispier and don't dry out as quickly. Definitely worth the investment for us. And I'm sure I'm not using it to its full potential.
