Lights for our new Kitchen display, have we chosen well?

We are putting together quite a few new Kitchen displays and we have just chosen our lights. Do you think they will go well? we had quite a debate amongst our designers so it would be great hear what the houzzers think! As you can see the Kitchen is nowhere near finished, so we have attached a few images including what its based upon and our worktop choice to help you decide!

Hello fellow designers. I love the light which no doubt looks even more dramatic when lit up. The ceiling of the showroom presents a challenge though - if you are keeping it I suggest hanging the lights as low as reasonably possible over the island so that the eye is not drawn up towards the ceiling and consider a dimmer if they are at direct eye level (I would definitely try one first before committing). I love the marble worktop - or is it Dekton? With these lights and the dramatic tops I would consider contemporary hardware for the units (perhaps bar handles). Good luck!

Thank you Coppice Guild, you are correct that it is dekton, and also correct with hanging the lights low, we hope they will not be much higher than a few hundred mm above the worksurface. Though it is a traditional style door the appliances etc will be very modern, including Neff coffee machines and potentially a smeg range cooker. I am not sure what we will be doing on the handle front yet. Its exciting to freshen up the showroom and we will post images as and when things are done!

TV is not staying there - corner by table, up high on the wall I think. I don't want to look at it when cooking!! I'm thinking of putting a larder style cupboard over there for food processor, blender, toaster etc. to be permanently plugged in ready for use. I'm fed up of having no space on the work surfaces. Really like the mix of wood and painted surfaces. We'll be moving an oak table & dining chairs in from another room. Nice idea about a full length window but loses way too much cabinetry (incl sink & d/w looking out over the garden) and impractical with people & muddy dogs coming in that way - there's a utility room for that. The doorway nearest the kitchen sink leads into the utility. The doorway by the existing oven is being bricked up as part of the plan and the new one will be closer to the breakfast end. I'm not sure what is meant by spinning the island around? The width of the room wouldn't allow anything deeper. Unless you mean a peninsula unit. Had been thinking about putting hob on the island along with a small food prep sink - love that in the current kitchen. Speaking to other designers is on the cards anyway as no rush to do kitchen until other building work are done first. But I admit to being a bit disappointed in this first impression considering what we'd seen in their workshop. Thank you everyone for your input. I daresay I'll be back for more advice on lighting/flooring/walls etc as the months roll on.

If deep grey really appeals to you then go for it! The beauty of paint is that you can always change your mind, it may be a bit time consuming but it's relatively inexpensive (compared to picking the wrong sofa or kitchen cabinets :0) I have a Pinterest board called 'The dark side' with hundreds of images of interiors that I find incredibly attractive (think Abigail Ahern) but some people would probably think were blacker than the inside of a camel and avoid like the plague :D I currently live in a small Georgian terrace with low ceilings and little natural light so most of them aren't an option (unless you really don't mind bumping into things) but I have painted two walls in my bedroom (which is much larger/higher for some reason) in a deep steel grey and I love it, I only wish I hadn't lost courage and painted the other two in a pale white/grey. Hi ! Thanks for the shout Boundsgreener ! With a room size like this - even with the obstacles you have - there's usually quite few different layout suggestions that could work ! (But if we were designing for you we'd need a lot more info about you, than is posted on here, to design this space optimally for you !) Some suppliers (European ones mostly ) do deeper than standard base drawer cabinets - that then allow wall unit storage to go from worktop to ceiling on the wall while still having a full depth worktop, and monster deep drawers, in front - can work well if you need extra storage, as long as you are tall /have a good reach! This, in addition to other fab suggestions above, could work on one side of this kitchen ... but I guess that also depends on your budget too ! re boiler placement - it's a good idea to start with that, by talking through the placement options first with a boiler installer ! Rather than designing the rest of the space first and then hoping where you place it will be ok ? The key things I'd suggest you reconsider on your plans posted here would be the DW placement - it's going to bang slap in the way when open here - and the worktop space between the hob and the oven housing - yes technically you could go as close as 150mm away from the tall cabinet - but in reality - it's always advisable to have a landing space for putting down hot things, either next to or directly opposite an oven - in this case you don't have that. Because your home needs to work well, not just now, but when you may have toddlers around your feet too - it's worth booking some quality time with a credible designer if you can - so if you have a supplier in mind - see if you can book some one to one time - to go through everything in fine detail with the designer, before you order ! Or if you are buying on a budget, from a warehouse type supplier - then there are a few of us totally independent designers around who can work with you ( I work remotely via email and calls etc) to get the design just right to tick all your boxes - then shop around with the plans ... (I know some people would say 'get a free plan done at a nice kitchen studio and then just use their plan' but that's not really fair on the studio and most are becoming wise to this now!!) Hope that helps a bit ?

Hi there,

They are from the manufacturers showroom, Im waiting for that info myself! As & when I find out I will pop the answer on here!

As for progress on the Kitchen I have attached a few more images, still a building site but its starting to take shape. The next thing to finalise is wall paint, farrow & ball elephant breathe is the winner at the moment..

Hiya. I'm a lighting designer in Surrey/Middlesex and just love the fixtures. Just a few things to think about if you don't mind me point them out. Do you have any other lights in the ceiling? Most people would have down lights as well in here. I don't think you'd have enough light in the kitchen with just these lights in them. The incandescent bulbs tend not to last that long and replacement can be quite expensive. How long are you going to have the lights on for? In the kitchen probably quite a long time. You can now get incandescent filament LED lamps, but they're quite expensive. Clear glass can sometimes get quite dirty in a busy steamy kitchen, sometimes these lights only look great when they are really clean. Fabulous fittings - but just think about the practicality and also the technology. But as I say to all my clients, if you love them - use them!

It is in fact in the front window of our showroom! there will be much more lighting on the kitchen during the day and possible a few spotlights plus these at night. They are more of a feature than a practical light. The glass is smoked black rather than completely clear which would possibly help in a "real" situation. Thank you for your expert opinion! its always great to hear other ideas on Houzz!

So sorry - didn't realise this was for a showroom! Didn't read that properly! In that case I would definitely invest in the LED filament lamps if they are going to be left on all day. :)

All the lighting (except the feature lights) will be LED I believe (so shouldn't cost a fortune to run!). As for the worktop it is called Dekton. It should just be called Carrara Marble.

I have the actual name, it is by Dekton and called Aura. Here is an image of it on a larger scale.

The lights are still not up! but here are a couple more images of the Kitchen. We went for castle grey for the walls in the end, for some reason in this room the hint of green is very strong. We also love the Smeg range cooker. Progress is slow but its looking good!

Like the light -but just one thought - we had 3 similar lights over our kitchen island, but broke 2 within as many weeks, as they were also glass. Have now replaced with stainless steel lights - you might like to consider this.

Think the kitchen will be nice... Don't think brushed chrome or stainless steel is the right look, something chalky or.... I think it would look really good with any of these.... : ))
