Please help me finish the kitchen!

We've moved about 4 weeks ago in to the house we've been redoing for 14 months! can't tell you how happy I am that all is (almost) finished.
The 'almost' is what I need help with. The kitchen extension, and kitchen itself, looks great (I think!). We initially planned the space to include a 'chill out' zone at the back, with a sofa and a large TV; but we realised it's a bit too much, as we have a cinema room in the basement, cable in the living room and bedrooms - and we rarely watch tv!
The other idea was to include a dining table (we have a rather nice glass one) but with the chairs it looked out of place somehow and we decided we don't want it any more. And as our 'after Xmas' party (buffet style) was a success, we realised we can live (happily!) with a folding table (you can probably tell we don't have kids).
My question again is: what shall I do with that space? Get a large TV with a low stand and a couple of shelves/ cabinets? Or try again the dining table (maybe with some ghost chairs). Or maybe you houzzers could come up with an entirely different idea... Pretty please, help.

Comments (10)Hi Jo, I understand your problem, I had a similar issue in the past and it was the cost of hiring professionals that was the problem and I had to get really creative to solve the issues! Listed building consent is free. You could apply for this yourself, if you actually needed it (planningportal). You could call your local council and speak with the officer about what you want to do and get their advice yourself without having to hire anyone. If this gorgeous place was my home, I would add some beautiful glass / french doors to the conservatory and keep them closed most of the time. Then in the conservatory dining room I would add some gorgeous conservatory blinds (including roof blinds) and or curtains and some great radiators (I really love the ACOVA ones, they blend traditional and modern really well and are really efficient) or use the plug in type to heat the space an hour before dinner. I would probably get insulating blinds and have fun with a colour scheme for all of the soft furnishings such as rugs and anything that will help keep the place feeling warm. I am not sure how large or young your family is, but if you were considering a rejig of the kitchen, adding a small bar area would suffice for breakfast and mean you only had to heat the conservatory on weekend lunches and at dinner times. I'd go for a light grey on the walls, you could look at farrow and ball strong white or a darker grey such as cornforth white , both should work with the floor which has grey tones. Can you take more pics of the seating end and give dimensions? I'm just wondering if a small sofa would be better next to the kitchen units (broken up by a really tall plant) with a chair in the corner between the doors with a lamp behind? The compact sofa, chair (also comes in grey and yellow) and floor lamp are all m&s. I like Monica's idea of enamel pendants, these are by pooky. Will you be dressing the windows at all? I'd accessorise with lots of different textures and plants to get that scandi feel. I'd look at a mirror splashback which will also make the room feel wider, I like an antiqued effect for texture but you may prefer a plain one. Comments (18)I would try some different neutrals such as Little Greene 'Slaked Lime Dark' or Farrow and Ball 'Light Grey17'. It a lovely bright space and the floor is very warm and quite strong so I would go for a warm stoney neutral that complements the floor and the range. If the paint is more obviously blue of green it will make the floor look even stronger. Little Greene does oil based so I would use that over water based. Comments (15)Thank-you very much for the comments. I hope it will be a great space, but playing around with it and changing the design at the last minute is getting a bit stressful! This is the design that the build company showed us initially - just their initial thought as it how it would look. I found feeling the area where they had positioned the fridge/freezer very tricky. We want a free-standing french larder style fridge and the doors and level of matching with the rest of the units didn't seem like a good fit. The support pillar for the steel that crosses the island in the attachment below has also been a real annoyance. It sticks out 23cm, so it can only really go through empty-ish cupboards. Clearly anything to the left of that steel is difficult to vent. On the design in my intitial post, I was intending to have a dropped ceiling element that stretched just beyond the steel. This would let me have a powerful extractor and exit the flew onto the flat room (hidden by the drop ceiling 'box'). I like the idea you describe of a full wall of units, then island, then table. I guess Jonathan's proposal is similar to that. While I love the efficiency of the "4 double door" hideaway I just don't like the aesthetic, so will need to think about something else. Bringing it back to what we need... Utility room: enough to stash the washing machine, store the vacuum cleaner and hang a few clothes. No need for a sink. Free Standing, 90cm wide fridge, nicely framed either by wall of kitchen units. Waist height oven with an additional "top oven / grill (broiler)" - so at least one full height column. Good size kitchen island with at least two seats. Approx 90cm induction hob, plus a gas domino hob. Powerful, externally venting extractor over hob. I'm relatively open to moving the kitchen/living area to wherever it works best. I'm also not desperate to have the hob on the island (but that would be nice). As far as I know, the builders haven't done anything that can't be easily adjusted at this stage - but I think that will change in a couple of days - and they are planning for the kitchen to be in the old part of the house. As for rooflights - I thought, perhaps wrongly, that it would be light enough with the big bifold doors. It is an east facing room, and the old room had some sliding paitio doors and it felt bright enough. So I have left roof lights out on the basis that - but I'm also concerned about noise. (Cheaper too!). The biggest window we can gave without incurring significantly more cost is 1800mm x 1000mm - I'm minded to be 2 or 3 of these in that middle section. Thanks!...See More

11 years agolast modified: 11 years agoAnother idea for the lighting would be to simply replace the existing pendants with ones identical to those over the bar. If you feel you really need more furniture in the space, consider a black console or buffet along the wall which has no wall lights and add a pair of lamps in a style to match the room. This could be used for more "buffet-style" parties and storage of party supplies. Happy New Year!!

And just to answer to a few of those: Victoria, great ideas! what you don't know is that we have over 5000 books, a whole room as a library, half of the office room has books, at least one bookshelf in each room - I really would like to keep the kitchen without! I think my other half would love your idea about a pool table - although I never saw him play - but he got the cinema room as his man-den, so I'm not telling him your suggestion.
Karen, great thinking about the red, I would clearly think about those lines of tie the space together; the sofa is screaming for some other colour cushions - I need to do some shopping soon.
Michelle, give me 5 minutes please.

11 years agoWhatever you decide to do with that side wall, I would suggest that you keep the idea of an "art gallery" in mind. The furnishings/accessories you currently have in the room are strongly suggestive of this theme. Even your kitchen is very "artsy".
For the buffet/bar, I would suggest three ideas. The first picture is of a mid-century modern console. If you are into the eclectic idea, some wood would bring some warmth to the space while at the same time keeping with the modern vibe.
The second picture stays very closely with what you already have in the room - black, sleek, modern but also brings in a bit of wood for warmth.
The third picture goes in an even more eclectic direction with a very ornate console painted in a gloss black.
All three ideas would work so it's really up to your personal taste.
For the shelves above the bar/buffet, I would go with all glass as in the fourth picture. I would try to keep most of the barware in clear glass so that the items on the shelf will still have a "lightness" to them. Keep books, etc. in the drawers in the console. Liquor could be arranged on a mirrored tray on the console itself. Keep clutter to a minimum. I'd still like to see some art on that wall, too.
Another idea would be the last photo, which is my least favorite, but, again, its a matter of preference. Replace the green portion of the wall with red and I would do the wooden cabinetry in black and the shelf in glass.
One more idea, to bring the red into the lounge area, consider a red rug with a sculpted design to fit under the entire sofa area.
Any chance we could see a pic with the sofa in the middle of the room?

11 years agoHere is an example of your kitchen with 3 prints on aluminum. It's a triptych in warm red tone. If my assumption that you have 9 feet high ceiling is correct then these are 37x37" prints. The budget is about 2k for all 3 prints.
