Flooring hallway kitchen/diner

Hi, we live in 1930's terraced and are going to knock though the back wall between the kitchen and living room to create a through kitchen diner, my dilemma is I want the same flooring to run from a narrow hallway into the kitchen/diner. My kitchen is beech with black worktops, I was thinking black tile effect laminate would set this off nicely but worried how this might look through the hallway.

Hi. I think it depends on the actual tile and layout as tiles aren't out of place in a hall. Wide tiles/planks should make a narrow room wider. Dark floors and light walls also make it appear bigger. Is this also to be your lounge (I'm not sure if this is being relocated)? Maybe you could also consider wood effect floor in either a rich/dark hue or ebony, if you're set on black, to offset the beech. I can't find images of the exact tiles you want but the attached should give you some idea

hi - with this new door configuration it opens up further possibilities - safety wise it's best to move your hob in from the edge of the island - so pan handles are less 'knock able ' designing to suit rooms is ok - but much better to design to suit the people using the room too ! to do this effectively a good designer will need to find out as much as possible about you and the members if your family - how you cook/ shop how often you entertain etc etc it takes time and when done well provides the best results for the room. this is what I do for a living - I don't sell product - purely design !- so instead of offering 'free design ' like studios do ( then making margin on the products you buy) - I charge a fee to design and then you shop around and get the best deal saving much more than the design fee in the process ! so you can see with this in mind - I can't design it for free for you on this thread - but happy to take it further in a professional capacity if you want to drop me an email ! ( nb we are concept designers who can take on whole houses too - so could look at the project in entirety too if needed - as what you do with each room has a knock on effect on the next ! ) kind regards Karen OnePlan

Hi there! It's always a little tricky to visualise without an image but if we break it down the colours you have to work with are: dark floorboards, grey patio slabs, dark brown and mid oak furniture, and a vanilla kitchen. There's quite a mix there and based on the furniture and dark oak floorboards, it seems like the space might have quite a traditional feel? With this in mind, I'd suggest a herringbone floor in your kitchen. A natural oak would work well with the vanilla kitchen units and furniture. Yet, a darker oak could blend nicely with your hallway boards. Or, there's the option of an ashen colour that would lend itself to your grey tiles outside. Yes we needed an RSJ and all of the walls underpinning as there were no foundations. Was very costly but definitely worth it as we live in that end of the house. I think that With having an older property, costs do just spiral. I can’t remember how much the RSJ was, sorry. i think our building work was about £25000. Can you leave the fireplace in and have it open so you can see it from both sides? Then have your kitchen and dining in the current lounge and your living area where it is at the moment but open it up apart from the firePlace? We’ve left in our old exposed stone work and cleaned it up.

Hi Will, I don't think there is any form of industry standard or even a regulation minimum (although enough space to fully open a cupboard door is the bare minimum). However different sources give recommended spacing. the link below gives 36in (90cm) as a minimum for walkway widths. but some recommend more (eg 100cm or even 120cm). It really depends on what you feel is more important for your kitchen layout: more cupboard/worktop space or a more open walkway in and out. https://www.houzz.com/magazine/how-much-space-you-need-and-what-to-do-if-you-dont-have-it-stsetivw-vs~95713633 Personally, I aim for 120cm or more between cupboards in the main kitchen, but 90cm is fine for the entry into the kitchen area as it is less likely for someone to stand in this space whilst someone else needs to pass into the kitchen. Absolutely the best idea is to live in the space for a bit to see how you use the current layout and ways that you want to improve it and it gives you plenty of time to come up with ideas. What would you think if the garage/office/playroom be accessed from the living room instead? If you really needed a second freezer, then is there space in the area under the stairs that isn't going to become the W/C? I hope that's given a few different things to think about!
