Wall taken down between kitchen and dining room

After moving into our bungalow four months ago, having the wall between the kitchen and dining room removed, we now have a lovely big room.
Recessed ceiling lights are now complete. We are planning to replace the previous carpet and tiles with Amitico or Karndean with wood effect design as it is recommended to be hard wearing.
We plan to keep the black Maia work surface as it is only two years old but get a new gas hob and its surface raised all to one level.
We plan to replace the cooker hood with one in stainless steel and possibly get a glass or stainless steel splash back behind the hob.
We are thinking of having the kitchen cupboards resprayed as they are good quality and in good condition - possibly in an off-white colour.
Then the walls need decorating throughout, and considering cool neutral shades.
Any advice, comments or suggestions most welcome.

Hi Anne! You've been busy! Structurally, that looks like a good solid kitchen, ready for painting.
We're big fans of Annie Sloan chalk paint. The beauty of chalk paint is that you can do all the work yourself, as opposed to having your cupboards resprayed. You don't even need to remove the doors. No prep, sanding or primer- just paint a few coats, and apply wax. 'Old white' sounds like just what you are looking for. Our wild card is Paris Grey (very much in fashion, and would work beautifully with your worktop).
In terms of splashbacks, anything goes with off white or grey units. We've attached some examples of some splashbacks. If you are considering going a colour, narrow down your search, then buy a tester pot to see if you can live with it. Alternatively order a glass sample to see it in the space.
Theres a limitless world of colour out there, so have fun!

We think the monochrome-look cupboards are going to make this kitchen incredible contemporary and sleek. We think you can make it even more modern with a bright splash-back, in a apple green for a fresh feel or sky blue for more country (this will tie the units and flooring nicely together).
If this were our home, we'd love to add personality by painting the the table set in sweet pastel shades (see pic for inspiration), decorated with a lovely vase of flowers.
As for the walls, we think they need a huge (and we mean HUGE) wall clock, something quite vintage to fill the space. And if you're someone who has each page of your diary filled with notes and appointments, then chalkboard walls are an excellent way to break up your room and remind you of the important things. How big or how small is completely up to you.

We have the same sort of layout in our 60's dormer house. The opening to our lounge is wider and has bi fold doors. It means we can open it out wider for social events, but close it in winter to keep the room cosy when it's cold. The only negative to having a door there (one one from the entrance hall) is lack of one full wall to put the sofa against! You're door is smaller so it's probably not as much of an issue as ours is.

It's tricky to say without a plan, but some things to consider: - An eat in kitchen makes a great family space and will increase the resale appeal of the property - A clever kitchen designer will be able to work in a solution for boot and coat storage (again this is tricky without a plan). Perhaps a small boot cupboard/shelf just outside so you take your boots off before coming into the house. - A long narrow room can feel cramped but having a run of kitchen units on one side only will help open up the space. - Consider open shelving instead of top wall units - Clearly defined spaces can also break up a longer area, for instance using different flooring. - Think about the wall colour and keep it light and airy to maximise visual space. Hope that gives you some food for thought!

Just wondering why you would want to put up a divider between kitchen and dining? I can understand having living separate, but I wouldnt have glass. A divider would be used to close off, make more snug, switch yourself off by whats going on at the other side, but if it was glass I don't see how that would work best.

Hi Sasi, I understand your dilemma here, it is difficult to configure the layout without knowing the options for wall removal. I would suggest contacting your local council and asking to speak with the planning department as a first call, they will be able to refer you to a surveyor who could inform you on whether the kitchen/dining wall is load bearing. I have a feeling it may be since there are only 2 main walls supporting the ground floor, that being one of them! However best to check with the experts first. Once you get clarity on this and if it is possible, you could remove the wall and have an open plan kitchen/diner, utilising the conservatory for dining as Kay has suggested. You could then consider a utility and shower room space coming from under the stairs into the end of the kitchen. Of course knocking walls down definitely adds quite a lot cost wise, but if you were prepared for that there could be some cost effective ways of laying out the space once it's gone. Hope that makes sense, let me know what the outcome is if you find out about the wall removal and if I can help any further!

Thanks for comments about Annie Sloan chalk paint - I will check this out. Also thanks for advice on splashbacks. We are checking one out that is pewter in colour and looks as if it could look great.

Really glad to hear that Blinds 2go thinks the kitchen will look incredible contemporary and sleek. Yes, we agree that adding our own personality is a good way ahead - and also that the walls need something large to fill the space. Thanks for these ideas.
