What furniture?

We've just purchased a new sofa for our living room. We plan to have dark grey (dog friendly carpet) but are wondering about furniture. We like the White hemnes - see pic - but it might look s bit cold and too modern, we do like warmth and coziness.

Could a wood work? But with the grey carpet? Could a few antiquey pieces work make it feel more homely and less show home? Need help!

hi, if you go for the right shade of brown (rustic weathered shade) furniture, it could work with grey carpet - it all also depends on the shade of grey, if it's a cold steel shade, it won't work with brown, unless you'll go for the warmer shade of grey (there's 50 of them, right? ;D )
Yes, the white cabinet doesn't look cosy, just because it stands on a parquet floor, and it's photographed with black sleek tv etc. Put it on the carpet, add some warm decor, and you can transform it :)

Thanks. Would be quite a dark grey (lol @ 50 shades) with a bit of a white spec. Walls white but can be painted. Any pics of furniture so I can get an idea?!

Generally a larger tile will make a room look bigger than a smaller one as they are less 'busy' also go for lighter colours across all surfaces (ceiling, floor and wall) if you can to increase the light in the room. If a Building Inspector is involved you may need to keep a certain colour difference between surfaces, but in the past we have negotiated a band at skirting level and at the edge of the ceiling to satisfy the regulations which could be an option if needed. The old idea of using mirrors to open up a space really does work. I don't know if you will have a window - if so I assume from the description that it would be either a velux type roof window or a vertical dormer window - either way if you have one try and put a mirror opposite if possible so the room is opened up even further and the light bouncing around the space is amplified. I know Ideal Standard do 'Concept Space' fittings that are more compact than their traditional counterparts which might be worth a gander. You can also get WCs with a sink over the cistern, an though these have never personally appealed, sometimes a small space breeds necessity. Good Luck!

Hi Suzie, could you perhaps do something a bit out of the box and choose something that is a splash of colour? Like a found object? Chinese ceramic stools? you can also go to vintage fairs etc. Or some companies source and stock interesting pieces. This is one : http://www.retrouvius.com/stock/storage I think more grey would be dull, more black would indeed make the room feel too small. I quite like the idea of timber for your chest of drawers etc. Difficult to visualise the space thought! Colour choice is pretty personal. I am partial to blues and purples.. but that is just me! It's hard to say without seeing it, but all neutral colours including greys belong to a 'hue'. For example, wood is generally yellow/orange, orange, or red/orange. Your tiles look to be a bit violet (some slate is blue/green). If they have a violet tinge and you have wood then that makes up two of three colours from a secondary triad - orange, violet and the third is green. It may be worth looking at green as an option as it tends to look good with wood and grey/violets. Almost everything in my house is based on this triad like this:

If you want to neutralize the orangey-red tones in the mahogany, and it sounds like maybe that is what you are seeking since you don't want more of it and you have considered painting it, then you will not want to pair it with a complimentary color, like greens and blues. The blue-green colors (complimentary) will actually accentuate the orange-y red tones. If you are seeing a lighter feel in general, then you will want to use light neutral paint colors that have undertones that are adjacent on the color wheel, like a creamy white with a salmon undertone or a beige with a slight pink undertone. In your textiles, you may want to play with the complimentary colors, but by placing the complimentary color right next to the wood, it will enhance the woods undertones that you probably aren't enthusiastic about. Agree on the brass tones, but look to the new brass tones and finishes. If you get too brassy or too shiny/laminated you may end up getting an outdated feel look and not something fresh and current. Remember, if you decide to paint, prime a large section of your wall BEFORE putting any samples up. I recommend a 4x4 square. Then test one color at a time in a 2x2 square inside that primed area. When selecting your wall colors, narrow your choices to 3-4 and prioritize them by your favorites. I am a big believer in varying your wood tones and mixing them. To successfully mix woods you need to look at the variation of color in the mahogany itself and choose a wood tone from those variations.. You may find that there are some deep chocolate tones and striations in there. I would use those to add wood into your room. Even if the mahogany doesn't have a lot of variation, I am thinking a deep espresso tone or a chocolately walnut would work well with the mahogany. Another pro also advised to use metal and marble. These would be beautiful and would have a classic look. Hope that was helpful!
