I like the look of the hanging pendant lights but do think it will be a passing trend. Not least because of the practicality issue of non-directional light that you've already mentioned. I used wall lights in the spare bedroom to save surface space on the small bedside tables. They're only cheap £16 ones from IKEA but I think they look nice all the same and they swivel so you can use them directionally. We needed plug in ones which limited our options but I covered the white wire in grey electrical tape to help it blend with the wall colour. I'm not sure there's a hard and fast rule for this. I worked out the placement of ours by positioning the king size bed in the exact centre of the wall then laying in it to see what distance felt comfortable from there for the switch. Ended up with the height of it in alignment with the top of the bed frame/headboard and about 10cm out to the side (the pic shows our bed frame and I've just drawn on the light switch position). In hotels I've seen them lower down - almost in line with the top of the bedside table but I would worry about knocking things over when trying to find the switch at night (especially spilling a glass of water onto a low down light switch seems an accident waiting to happen). The way I have it means I can just feel along the edge of the headboard up and know its just slightly over from the top edge. I've never had cause to regret the positioning or getting one installed - in fact its one of my favourite small luxuries! Hope this helps.

Hiya, I do like the gold/copper side tables :) but we have soooo many metallics going into the lounge/diner/kitchen that I just wanted something a little less gold in the spare room! ......... ..... Yes, the writing bureau is 100% going in the guest bedroom as that is where it will get used. It will be used for the laptop and paperwork, in a room with a sea view. The guest bedroom will have a double purpose- the view is too beautiful for it only to be used for guests. Also it’s over 20ft long!

Thanks all and sorry for the lack of response! E D: on the curtain fabric I was thinking of something like velvet or similar but as you say cotton may fold better...I am going to a fabric shop tomorrow so will have a good look at what they've got. Sarah: thanks for your suggestion, really like your choice!! But yes something with a shade may be better for our room... Ribena: drape and pool is exactly what I was thinking off thanks!!! And it had passed through my mind to have some cream wooden slated blinds also so just have the curtains for dress. Minnie: liking your suggestions...still very keen on curtains tho. As we Have space it would probably work better as you say to move the bedsides away from the bed a little. Will do some experimenting!! Also love the chair idea!! Hadn't thought of that but definitely nice to have a chair in a guest room :-) Gina: thanks v much also, liking those lights! Definately needs to be something minimal as you say... Really love these but not quite as willing to pay the price!!! a lot of food for thought! thanks all :-))
