Advice needed on making a small loft en-suite shower room look big

Please share ideas to make a small (3mx1.5m) loft en-suite room look bigger when tiling and decorating. The shower en-suite will be fitted end of next week (layout already determined) and we now need to choose tiles, paint and flooring asap...Thanks in advance, Sam.

Hi Sam,

The obvious comment is not to go too dark. Don't be scared to go for big tiles. We use big tiles in all our projects and in the showroom and doesn't effect it what so ever. I believe the bigger the better as there is less grout lines (and less to clean then). Maybe think about going for rectangle tiles for the floor and brick bind them. This way the grout lines can be positioned to make the room feel longer (like the picture I've attached).

Gina, I'm not really sure why i put it there to be honest!! The suggestion to locate the shower as shown on Jonathan's plan obviously makes much more sense! Some of my design thought was based on me thinking the toilets would need to be on the same wall so as to use the same soil pipe, not sure if this is just my incorrect logic though!??? Jonathan, I understand what you are saying about incorporating the cupboard space into bedroom 3 but if you remember back the plan (see below) was to create a study/bedroom from the hallway, old wc and landing cupboard. It wouldn't be possible to do this if we divided bedroom 3 into two rooms as they'd be no access to the far bedroom. Your plan would leave me with no more bedrooms than i have now and with a smaller bed 3. We could of course incorporate the cupboard space into bed 3 rather than the bathroom, making it an even bigger room but I'm slightly reluctant to as this room is one that has been finished.

Just seen this post, all sounds very odd. Usually the Building Regs guys a great, you get the odd sticky wicket, but they usually try to help not hinder. I would go directly over his head and speak to someone else. I take it that it's yourselves not a company doing the conversion. The floor is the first thing that needs to comply as the joists may have needed to be supported, extra supports put in etc and a building company would have known that. You have to get building regs at certain stages for all sorts of things. So, maybe he's not being difficult at all insisting on all sorts of changes and amendments if the process wasn't followed properly to start with. However, as I said before, ask for another opinion and try to find the solution to make your hard work pan out.

It really comes down to how many clothes you have and how much space you need to store them, along with where you prefer to get dressed and how you use your ensuite - obviously no point having double sink if you never share the bathroom, but if you're brushing your teeth while the other half is doing their thing in the next sink then this bigger ensuite might work better for you. It all depends on how you want to live, how much stuff you have and where you want to store it. Following with interest! I have something similar that needs renovating, but in an apartment, and no window - around 3500x1200. Personally, I wouldn't swap the loo and shower (I always prefer a loo to be near a window (!) and wouldn't lose a window ie valuable ventilation for the sake of a slightly bigger shower, but obviously it depends what's important to you). Maybe half tiling the non-shower areas is an option? The bathroom fitter may have clever solutions for fitting the right size tray into that width. Good luck!
