Need advice for my hall & stairs! Please :)
Comments (21)A vertical column radiator would indeed be a good option, and I like the anthracite idea. Alternatively, if you could find a traditional tall victorian radiator (may not be easy to source) and finish it in a bronze/verdigris, it could work really well with your dark mint and would be a real statement! Your staircase is lovely, and I would go with a contemporary striped runner, white painted sides and a simple rod....See MoreInterior design ideas required on old 1920s house in London
Comments (14)The fireplaces in the bedrooms are decorative. Living room is a real open fire and the study (with the wooden fireplace surround) has been converted to gas. We were lucky to acquire three of the fireplaces from the house directly across the road. They cost £500 which I thought was a bargain until I realised they would cost me £2,500 to restore them! The wooden surround was in the house when we bought it and we had to buy the cast iron insert. The surround is actually mahogany, I'm not actually that keen on it but couldn't bring myself to rip it out! I would get to know the neighbours and see what original features they have in their houses. Be careful with architectural salvage, for example salvaged doors if you need them have often been dipped in acid and the glue joints tend to fail after a while. We employed a conservation architect to restore the house and I felt his design was one which would stand the test of time. We had folding doors in our last house. These timber doors are bespoke made and look/feel quality. Just a bit more sophisticated....See MoreNeed help with my Hall and stairs 1930's semi house
Comments (8)If you don't want to lose the tiles then cover them with carpet in a rich colour. May I suggest dove grey or purple Leave the hard wearing paper Below the dado and paint either purple with the grey carpet or grey to compliment the purple floor. The upper walls bright white and eggshell in white for trims...skirting and doors. Wayfair site have some unusual silver or purple artwork choices for the walls. I would also choose a silver/grey or white tall radiator to add to the contemporary look and a roller blind combining those colours for the window....See More1920s makeover authenticity
Comments (12)I think the style differs per area as it was about showcasing local materials and craftmanship. My brother has one in Surrey, no dado or picture rails just coving. He has a panelled fire and study which he’s painted but you’d normally leave the wood on show. Oak floors are quite common, parquet was also used, this is a restored one from the same age. William Morris would be a popular wallpaper choice. Attention was often given to ceilings too. It might be worth looking at Ben Penreath, interior designer as he’s done a couple. I would just focus on the architecture (have the original features been stripped?) rather than slavishly sticking to interior design personally as i guess a lot of furniture was handmade rather than use the art deco style of furniture (that is just a guess though!) There are a number of National Trust houses, may be worth checking them out in your area...See MoreJo Lucas
