I need help for my bathroom

I have a 17th century thatched cottage in Wiltshire and need a flooring idea for the first floor bathroom. Sadly the floor boards are not in good enough condition and, of course the floor is really quite slanting. I worry that tiles are going to crack? I had carpet before but this suffers with my 3 yr old twins... Is there a 'quality' lino these days? The bathroom furniture is 'Edwardian' and there are some exposed wooden beams and white painted wood vertical wooden panelling.

Hi. I'm not an expert and often a little knowledge is dangerous! However we had a very uneven floor in our lounge and wanted to install a solid wood floor as the original was not in good condition. The floor can be levelled either using a self levelling compound or by fitting a plywood floor over the top of the original. You should then be able to have the flooring type you want. Vinyl is good quality and great for bathrooms but you do need the floor to be boarded before it can be laid. I think your best bet is to get a free quote from a floor fitter!

I would try the plywood route too. If you want to put tiles down be sure to use a flexible adhesive and grout. I have a tiled bathroom upstairs (on a flat floor) and haven't had any issues. If you want vinyl, as minnie says, it needs to be laid on something flat. You could always get a few quotes to see what fitters suggest.

Hi. The mosaics are beautiful and I think what is throwing you off with the white tiles is that they are matt and not gloss, when the sink and toilet are shiny and the mosaics are shiny. I think it looks good so far and what would really help is to paint the window frame. I would usually say to use semi-gloss, but in this case, try a matt white paint to tie in the white tiles. Still use a moisture-resistant bathroom/kitchen paint to make it last longer. I would put a tall and narrow mirror above the sink in either a venetian style or with a frame that picks up on one of the abalone/capiz shell colours in the mosaic tile (it is difficult to tell exactly what colours are there on my monitor). That will help carry the reflective nature of your mosaics around the room. The pictures below are for ideas only (some only ship within the US, some are crazy prices, and none are the right shape!). We are still working on our new house, there is currently a bath with a glass half screen that is totally useless. The water bounces off whoever is showering past the screen and over the toilet, the floor, the ceiling, and it's only a half tiled wall so the wallpaper is peeling. I've considered the P or d shaped baths which give a larger section at one end in which to stand when using the shower and I've seen there are matching curved glass screens to go with them. Two points to consider. 1. If you are not planning on staying a shower could be a good selling point, the water saving of a shower versus a bath. Our last bath hardly saw a look in during 16 years and although it was a lovely deep double ended steel bath it gathered dust and the shower was definately the go-to choice. 2. I am now considering the usability of the bathroom for an elderly relative who has had a stroke, likes baths, but may not be able to get into, or out of one, with dignity intact. I'm thinking that a large walk in shower with additional wall jets could be a good option and the upscale could be a wow factor. Although you may not be in the same position you can never have enough forward planning.

I would probably choose an off white or white, to brighten the room and balance the greys in the wall tiling - you could even go with a satin white if you like, as it will make the room feel larger; the tiled walls are visually broken up into sections by the tile design, so a plain look for the rest of the room is what I'd recommend. If you include the door in your paint colour it will melt into the wall and make it feel larger and less "bitty", too. If you do not want to use white, you could go for a mid-grey that matches the mid-tones in the wall tiles and also the floor, but in this case it's very important to get the grey shade right - either a cool grey to offset the tiles, or a warm grey to go with them, although the danger there is that it might make the room a bit too bland. Personally, I love white - it's bright, neutral and you can always balance the minimalist "coolness" of white walls with accessories and/or artwork. Hi, As others have suggested, white or grey tiles would work really well - if you love the metro tile look then the large ones you've seen in B&Q aren't the only size available. Our most popular selling metro tile is this style: I can't recall the name of these off the top of my head and our tiling expert has just gone home! however these metro tiles are very well suited when paired with a dark grey grout.

Thanks folks, i have just been to a tiling/bathroom shop, the lady said marine ply first, then tile or wood (wood being warmer) so off to get a quote or two!
