Help with master bedroom decor please!

Need some help with a complete redecoration of our master bedroom based around the exisiting bed (with large matching side cabinets) and two William Morris-type lamps. We're looking for ideas for wall paint colour, window treatment, lush carpet, bedding and other soft furnishings to tie it all together. (Would like to avoid wallpaper, but would consider it.) Right now, we don't have any particular artwork to help with coordination. An upholstered chair would also be a welcome addition.

The room is bright and large with 8-foot ceilings, a large north-facing picture window on one side and a normal south-facing window with skylight on the other.

The colours in the lamp is making this process really difficult, so any specific ideas or random musings would be greatly appreciated!

May I suggest changing the shade of the lamp to something more updated and also take it out of the equation for right now,start with a rug or comforter you like first,then work from there,you can add pillows ,throws,and curtains to make it all blend,black is a grounded color so the lamp should go ,you don't have to match everything to the lamp...can you give us an idea of your style ?.

Taupe works well with the colours and a trefoils wallpaper (pale gold on creamy background) may look good as the lamps look slightly oriental. I don't know how big the room is but i'd consider wallpapering all of it and adding a taupe carpet. The ceilings are fairly high so hang curtain poles at the top to increase the sense of height (maybe taupe with a black border at the bottom). Add accessories in the 3 colours and maybe try a black velvet chair. Or alternatively a pale blue scheme should work.

Do you like it cozy modern ? Or just plain modern ?. The bedding looks great if your Into these colours I suggest trying to add more vibrant colors. Orange, gold, silver. You could try replacing the brown cabinet to a white table in the corner near your bed, add more metallic accessories and decor. I was thinking of putting some decor on top of your bed, how about this?. & if you wanted to make it more spacey I suggest putting a couple of mirrors. :) sorry for a lot of babbling though. xx

Hi Anna, I know it's a pain inheriting an outdated room but how exciting to make it your own! I think a scandi look would really energise and brighten this space too. Take a look at two rooms we have styled in this way. Our blinds fit perfectly in bay window areas allowing extra floor space and not blocking any heat from radiators. Ok, this is a great space so easy to fix. People might give you specific advice but really it depends on your taste. There are 3 important things you are lacking that will fix your room - zoning, texture and lighting. zoning - if you can walk into a room and read it immediately it translate as boring. To fix this you need to draw the eye around the room. You can use furniture, art, points of interest to do this. Perhaps a cool chair outside the bathroom door or a chaise lounge. Perhaps a big banana plant or fiddle fig between your windows. Perhaps a huge piece of art above the bed. Perhaps some cool wallpaper art there (check out Curious Egg). A reading nook? How about filling that massive space between the end of your bed and wardrobes? You could put a huge pouffe, love seat or ottoman on a rug there so it looks a bit like a dressing room area with seating. Anthropologie do some great options. texture - you need a huge rug to go partially under your bed and soften the room. Try French connection home or la redoute for affordable options. Why not texturise the wall your bed is against. Do the whole wall or a textured headboard made of timber etc. Abigail ahern does some great, easy to assemble faux wall options. Again I would recommend plants. Not everyone likes these I need a bedroom but again Abigail ahern does some great fauxs. lighting - the room is very light and bright but at night it probably can look a bit stark or cold. I would definitely advocate some free standing lights. These should be near whatever zones you create. Certainly I would have some bedside lamps and maybe a taller freestanding lamp elsewhere. Rule of thumb in a room this size is at least 5 lamps or freestanding lighting units! finally, if you like neutrals and want to avoid colour, neutral colour through texture is a great solution. A beni oudain rug, a large sheepskin over the bottom of the bed, a large wicker chair. And of course, plants. good luck!

Would you consider going towards a bluey green for your back wall? Think of a peacock,where blues & greens are so vibrant. Could be anything ranging from turquoise to teal to duckegg etc. It's such a big room, it could take some drama. The problem looking at it now is that the wall is so bland & deadens the green. Then you can add highlight colours with bed cushions & bedlinen. Have a couple of sets of cushion covers to change into every couple of months, to match the bedlinen. Or use all white bedding & change cushions d throws. IKEA does a small cushion with a turquoise cover, & you can buy other covers separately eg mustard, red. And have a look at Boogaloo Boutique. She up cycles furniture by covering it in wallpaper. Amazing stuff. You could get 2 matching chests of drawers from her. You might have to wait a bit for her to find 2 matching ones, or go for 2 similar ones, as they'll have same paper. I'd recommend the Bethan Gray paper in turquoise. It's divine.

Keep the lamp - it is idyllic. All colours do not have to match - nor do they have to tie in - odd items placed here and there are individualistic. Go with different shades of brown, caramel and taupe etc. Check Valspar (at B&Q) - they have thousands of colours. What is your style? Do you like vintage? modern? and what is the style of the rest of the house? Avoid wallpaper if possible - carpet lush shade of caramel, and accessorise with either gold, yellow or even different shades of green.
