Stylish cat ownership - tips needed!

Request to the brilliant Houzz team (or lovely Houzzers below!): tips on incorporating a cat(s) stylishly into the decor (litter trays, pet beds, scratching posts, cat flaps etc) would be enormously helpful!

I would like to have everything in place for when I go to the cat sanctuary in a couple of months, and would rather avoid horrible cheap looking tat (not that I'm averse to a bargain, one is on a budget, but you know what I mean!).

We are just deciding on how to split our budget of 'as little as possible' to make our kitchen liveable for next 12-18 months before we gut it and completely remodel. Obviously we want to spend as little as we can as everything we spend is money we can't spend on the rest of the house renovation. Our problem is that many of our units are in very damaged / poor condition due to a leaking sink, we we will also need to replace. There is also hardly any storage. - we can't have (cheap) open shelving because our naughty cats are ninjas and like to climb and knock things off. Any advice or tips would be appreciated. I was thinking of either getting a few basic ikea units, and a large dresser off gumtree or eBay - or trying to pick up an entire kitchen second hand off eBay and painting it?

I always paint wood black in any garden I design. It cheers up tired fencing. Black is the colour of shadow and therefore fades into the background, making a nice foil for plants. Here's a link to a blog post about this. Blog Post 'Paint it Black'

No cat, yet. Need to finish the loud and bangy work, first. Though, we do have a temporary cat, who is staying with us for a month while her owners move house! An old lady, she doesn't really do "elegant", but she's definitely made herself at home!

She's lovely! We had two black cats but it turned out we lived too near a main road :(

This one is not allowed outside while she's staying with us. I'm not taking that risk with someone else's beloved 12 year old moggy!

Smart Showers Ltd Yes, whole house! Things have slowed down a bit, as we tend to be out at weekends over the summer, but once the winter sets in we'll be back on the case (or so I am promised!).

She's gorgeous. We're going to miss her <<sobs>>. But it's given me a chance to have a dry run and work some things out, so she's been like a practice cat, lol.

Carolina that is a great article, thank you! I adore the cutout cat door, lol. Probably wouldn't physically fit in my place, but I'm certainly going to look at options!

And yes, cats always have such lovely characters! Do you know what type of cat you'll go for or just decide on the day? I have a torti-black who is a nightmare to take to the vet but absolutely gorgeous in every other way!
