Hi Emma, we used Xenon strip lighting for the bookshelves.

Thanks for your help Minnie and Misha, you are kind! Laura Ashley has a big mirror that might be ok ? Constance? can't add the image... We have shelves on the TV wall opposite the sofa - see photo. We have one more box to go above TV which is still drying! Not as deep as the speaker shelves but same height. I need to swap/spread the books around too to mix the colours over the sea print. (I have sent so many to the charity shop) I think you are right, there is no real need of shelf above radiator if we go for big and round mirror. It would be quite a strong design but is hopefully balanced by the TV cabinet etc. My first thought was for a round mirror near the lamp on the TV cupboard but husband complains he will be looking at himself all night. So there is a gap I had not planned. Not sure what to put there? Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help.

Hi, Would two bookcases fit next to each other on the back wall? You'd probably have to move the desk more towards the entry door so it won't be centred under the window. Or, one bookcase next to the desk (where the wall light is) and the other on the back wall with wall shelves next to it. I'd hang the painting above the radiator.

I’ve struggled to find an example of a natural wood bookshelf that hasn’t been painted over, to be honest! I would paint the inside the same shade as your walls. That way it will marry well with the colours in your room. Without seeing the rest of the room it is hard to suggest a colour. This pic is a bookcase I found that, although not natural wood, it shows how nice a white can look inside.

I think I'd put the dining table where the blue chair is at the moment - it's closer to the kitchen and then it squares off the living room a bit more. Putting narrow shelves into the alcove section of the wall is a great idea though - adds some character there and splits the long room into two sections. I don't really like the long sofa blocking up the space between the pillars so much - at the very least, pull it away from the wall even just a little bit. Moving the dining table then frees up the other corner for a reading/study spot and to enjoy the garden from. I wouldn't worry so much about creating zones as it's all going to be multi-functional - you'll see the garden wherever you sit, you can read in whatever seat is comfy at the time. You might find that you move the furniture around as seasons/needs change.
