brighten up my dining room

Not only are we doing our living room but our dining room too. It's been jade white (looks duck egg blue) for ages and I hate it. living room will be cream brown and Red. what colour for dining room? I have beech furniture with black slate insert on my dining table. any suggestions much appreciated.. Please excuse the mess we are upside down at the moment! thanks x

Light brown with a dark brown feature wall

Or light grey

Both with white woodwork to break the colours up

Do NOT hang art higher- its at the right height. Normally I would not recommend hanging a mirror in the dining area ( who wants to catch yourself eating!) .... but it would bounce a bit more light around. But I do love the turquoise painting. The two chairs by the window look lost and do not relate to the rest of the room, they need a little table between them, also the little cushions on them disappear- what about some aqua cushions here? I would definitely hang a mirror on the wallpapered wall opposite the windows to reflect the views and break up the busy pattern. The rug by the sofa is nice but a bit matchy matchy with the wall and sofa. I would break it up with a warmer neutral like a sisal rug. But of course I am basing my coments on what colours I can see on my monitor! Your home is already beautiful and you have good taste so choose what you want from any advice given here!

Lovely potential to develop this space! Looking back towards your house from the garden area, what about window boxes under each of your ground floor windows with simple fixed shutters (louvre doors) either side of the long window? Keep your house walls light colour as at present with white painted window frames and either white or gentle soft green door, shutters, gate & window boxes. I would want to plant troughs along the left hand wall with some climbing plants as well as colour as in Kevin's sketch & I would also consider an outdoor mirror in the centre opposite the RH ? Kitchen window to reflect colours of the window box planting back to the house but I wouldn't want to restrict access back to the house by too much overplanting. Certainly power washing the yard & covering with pea gravel could be good or paving as in main garden. Instead of knocking down the wall & if expenses allow, what about a wrought iron gate giving an impression of peeping into a Moroccan courtyard?! Enjoy your exciting project & have fun!

The sofa definitely looks like its blocking some light. Is it possible to change the layout so the storage is on the wall where you photo frames are as you walk in and the sofa moving to where the storage unit currently is, so the length of the room can be used as the living area? Also, the lack of natural light to bounce off the walls can make the light/neutral paint appear dull. These colours never work in a naturally dark room, they work best with natural light as, like you say, it can feel drab and dull. I'd suggest using a deeper wall colour to make the room feel cosier and homely, and use lighter and brighter coloured accessories and furniture to give the room a lift. The oak flooring will dramatically improve the room.

Yes different rooms. There is a hallway separating them. Our dining room doesn't get much light

Ok. It might be nice to carry some of the colour through anyway so you have some continuity. I know the room doesn't get much light but I think you can afford to be bold in a dining room. Would you consider adding some red wallpaper above the dado rail and painting cream beneath? Given the ceiling height I think the room can carry this. I've tried to pick hopefully what is a non-offensive wallpaper which is Radiance by Harlequin as I don't know your taste. Alternatively you could do a feature wall and paint the rest cream.
