Need a modern solution for stairs in an old farmhouse !

I have stairs going up in my living room to the loft. They are too old and not solid enough. As the living room has high ceilings and is generally in a quite modern design, I would like the stairs to be more modern as well. Perhaps a mixture of old wood and black metal. I am looking for design ideas.

As the fire is a cylinder shape and black - I think black spiral stairs in simple ( as apposed to fancy ) metal would be a nice balance .

Hi, thanks. Sadly that is not working, as the Loft is used as storage and big boxes are being carried up and down, including bikes, skies etc. Stairs should be same shape.... but different design. Definitely some black in it and perhaps old wood. Just have no idea about the design. Just spiral does not work. Any other ideas? or pictures? I am open to suggestions.

Matt Patterson, it's because Americans love stuff...lots and lots of stuff. All the built-in storage space in our country is a relatively new idea. We live in an 1890s Victorian without a single closet, and I couldn't be happier about it, because it has helped us cure our addiction and attachment to stuff. It's a simpler, happier life, and it has freed up untold amounts of money and time.

I have just put one into our holiday home as I've always loved the look. I've always fought shy of having one in our main house as friends and relatives tell me that theirs have chipped relatively easily. I'm being very precious with my new one, but hope that I can keep it unchipped! Personally I'm not a fan of stainless steel belfast sinks as I prefer to have a traditional looking as opposed to a very contemporary kitchen. With this shape stairs either go for a big grand stairs which are one if the main features of the house which draws attention or go for a simple set of stairs. It really depends on if your stairs are the main feature when you walk in, you could even have spiral stairs and a landing! Hope this helps x

So would a pulley system work better ? Something with large wheels and a platform that raises as and when you need it - and when you don't it stays up and out of the way ?
If it's just access to a store not another floor level ?

A friend architect of mine recently created some modern stairs using raw steel - with all its imperfections. It echoes the markings of the aged wood in a modern way.

thanks, but there are only 3 pictures of staircases. I need something without a handrail. If you look at my picture, would you have a specific one that you would recommend? please can you send me a picture?

Sorry, I overlooked the handrail comment above. On our showcase you will not find any without handrail and balustrade due to building regulations.

However from what you have mentioned, we completed this staircase last month which combines timber and stainless steel. You could powder coat the steel black so it has a similar finish to the second staircase photo?

Great, I love the idea. How can I get more info on it? How would you fix it into my wall or flooring? and the cost of course? My house is in Austria near Salzburg.

Your best bet is to locate a reputable (possibly local or that works in Austria) company that can produce bespoke staircases. Give them your specification and ask them to do a site survey first. It is hard to say what fixing method would be the best / easiest and cheapest way without this.

The price.. well I wouldn't like to put a figure on it as companies are set up differently meaning manufacturing and installation costs vary.

As a starter, the staircase above was manufactured from stainless steel zig zag stringers (coated mild steel can work too), with solid timber box treads and low iron glass balustrade. There is a write up on our website here. A few main details like this should be enough (along with a survey) for the company to determine a staircase design and price for you.
