Should I paint this 250 year old oak beam?
Comments (47)Karin, thanks for your suggestion . The bricks surrounding the fireplace and forming the canopy are over 200 years old and each one is handmade. Although you can't see from the picture, each one is unique with different shading, sizing and surface markings. This style is very traditional in the part of France where we live. Where we can, we are trying to restore and retain the original features of the house. If we painted the bricks we would destroy something that took a craftsman almost a month to restore . The bricks had been cemented over at some point in the last 50 years and we rediscovered them when we restored the fireplace . Many of the original bricks couldnt be saved so we toured salvage yards to find authentic replacements. The entire house is over 250 years old so each room and every feature in each room has a different story to tell. The roofing timbers for example came from the hull of a ship and date from about 1700. When the ship was no longer in use the timbers were salvaged for the roof. How they got them here is a mystery. We are 150 km from the sea. That's a long journey by horse and cart....See MoreI want a Robot Vacuum Cleaner but which one should i buy?
Comments (3)I have bought iRobot Roomba 650 last month on ebay and I am fully satisfied. It easy cleans small carpet near door and laminate flooring even easier. As I noticed this model isn't noisy and I clean with it every day. At the beginning I was very hesitating to buy it or not, but I read a lot of forums, pros and cons and a lot of posts about iRobot Roomba on https://best4yourhome.com/irobot-roomba-comparison/ and made a decision that it is necessary device and can save your time if you are very busy....See MoreI’ve painted the wall, should I paint the fence too
Comments (13)Lovely garden. I had a little garden a while back that had white painted walls and lightish grey painted fence with natural decking. The grey made the fence recess and the garden feel bigger and the white reflected light and made it feel bigger too. The planting looked amazing against both because the greens really pop against the homogenised background. So I think you should paint it too, but personally I'd find a complementary grey. Cream and grey are great together....See Morewall and floor tiles different calibres but I love them - should I buy
Comments (2)Thank you siobhan That's good to know! With these tiles there's only a 3mm difference so it wouldn't be obviously or intentionally done - just worried it might look slightly odd ......See MoreSuzi AKA DesertDance So CA Zone 9b
