What flooring should I use in a ski-boot room in a chalet?

I am doing a chalet renovation in the Alps and am not sure what type of flooring I should use in the boot room, which will obviously get wet and muddy. I don't want to use tiles as they will chip and I would like something that is easy to clean; must be non-slip and can be used over underfloor heating. Any ideas? Thanks, Jean

We have used something along those lines before for boot rooms ....
Large (1700mm x 1000mm ) resin /composite plumbed in shower tray with or without hardwood duck board ( some people like duckboard some don't !) and low level shower attachment for hosing off at entrance - shelving with heavy duty plastic trays drip trays ( like plant pot under trays) for boot storage ... Plenty of shelves for these with enough height in between each shelf - Radiator bench seat for seating towards the dry end but still near the shower tray - so you can take off and step into dry floor or vice versa .... and extra heat for airing/drying coats etc. Plenty of hanging space for airing coats etc - add hot air blower /plinth heater for a touch of luxury - or for use when a quick dry off is needed.
Suggest rest of floor be something hard wearing (shop grade rather than domestic) Karndean /Amtico type product if you don't want tiles.

Using my knowledge of 2 grown boys, bed in original position with sofa parallel under window opposite bed so good social space created for when friends are over. Huge cushions to be on floor or on sofa but big - ski design. Desk near radiator so you stay warm for working ( feet on radiator seemingly). Old skis or snowboard bought off eBay and screwed onto sloping ceiling areas- it’s all about the graphics and the make, not the size or condition. Alternatively shelving unit created by 3 snowboards fixed horizontal to wall with shelf support brackets. Bindings can be removed so actually useable! One large roman blind with made with ski themed print from spoon flower.com ( one roman blind they can cope with putting up and down in their busy lives - 2 would mean one is just for show). Very large dirty washing basket that is not a faff to use! That’s off the top of their heads....

Hey Lindsay, I've had a crack at re-configuring the space (no expert!) and definitely consult an architect and/or structural engineer to advice about taking down walls. An easy option for an extra bedroom is to convert the dining room / study to a bedroom, If that is a sink I spotted in the study, then it could make a great en-suite if it's in the budget and if you can run toilet waste. This would give a decent double room or if you have little ones two single beds with desk spaces and small walk-in wardrobe. The current bedroom is quite narrow, if possible, could you build out to the garage wall? That would give you some extra space for bedroom furniture. Maybe even separate the toilet and bathroom and create an ex-suite shower room (unless the bedroom upstairs is also using that bathroom!) If possible removing the corridor between the house and utility/garage makes the utility room feel more part of the house instead of an outbuilding and would allow for a better flow between the garage, utility, garden and kitchen. I would make the garage slightly smaller and the utility larger that way you can store items you use within the house but want out of site in the utility room (pet food, sporadically used / bulky kitchen appliances) and items like bikes, tools, seasonal decorations, sports gear in the garage keeping them separate. Square of the conservatory and convert to solid structure with a roof light, open up the kitchen and lounge walls and build out a doorway to the lounge from the hallway so the kitchen and lounge have separate entrances.

Beautiful room so far. I would also suggest a wooden floor of some sort - probably a mid oak shade.. Have a look round and even bring some samples home to try if you can. Don't worry too much about having different woods as the floor needs to be something you like, being a large area. A nice grey rug with a touch of turquoise to match your armchair would be good but keep the pattern subtle. Once you get your sideboard for the children's toys it will look lovely. If this is the only living room, perhaps a tasteful small table and chairs for the children would be useful at the far end? Its always good to contain their stuff in one area. Alternatively, Ikea do some cute children's armchairs in a grey fabric that would match the style of your adult chair that would look amazing as well. The rug and cushions will add cosiness without clutter. Good luck:)

Hi! I have seen plenty of homes where you walk directly into the kitchen. I don't think this is such a big problem to do, though you do need to think about all the stuff people need to put on and take off usually at the front door and factor that into the design.
