What hides underneath your stairs?
Comments (27)@kenny Duncan: right now (and that's changing all the time) I have roughly the same amount of wine crammed in our space as I count in Sorrel's picture; but our under-stairs space is not half the size, only 7ft at its highest and L-shaped because the staircase is a winder. Without X-Ray vision no good picture, you see only the most-densely packed part of it. Not for sale :-)...See MoreIdeas for the Advice section!
Comments (45)Me again! Can we also have a reader's how to section. Such as a designer showing in pictures how to stage a sideboard with bijouterie depending on style, or how to style a bedroom with accents, or even articles on how to achieve X,Y,Z on a budget (I'm sure Houzzer's will have an idea - maybe this could be a section in itself?) Articles on colour or pattern matching etc would appeal vastly methinks. Even simple things that can easily be found on an internet search such as how to prep bannisters for painting would give a more magazine feel. Also a regional links page for cateogries. These could accompany articles. For eg. an article on prepping with images and step by step along with a list of Houzz recommended companies regionally who could undertake the work or fix a botched job! Topics I would be interested in include: How to add value to your home, how to maximise light, how to achieve a professional finish decorating; interior design ideas; how to change the facade of a property; flowers for the garen, door way, flowers for shaded areas, climbers for shaded areas, scented plants, how to ensure colour in the garden all year round etc. Decorating/furnishing ideas to create optical illusions to create size/light etc. Thanks for asking. I love this site and literlly spend hours getting lost on it with a cup of coffee :-)...See MoreBuilding over treacherous concrete garden steps?
Comments (2)I think if you could find some Decking boards, maybe used, make a landing outside the door meeting the wall. It could be supported with a noggin along the wall and then you can make more steps and less steep, leading away from the painted wall. They could then fill the area between the window/door wall and the wall with the flower basket on it. It would be a lot more child friendly. Don't forget to cloak the area where the handrail would be close to the window. you would still need access to the window for cleaning, possibly stair Balustrade's/Spindles under a Bannister....See MoreAdvice for staircases carpet or runners?
Comments (4)Hi Maggie. We are doing the same but have been fortunate enough to have an interior designer friend who has given us great advice: - Ground to 1st floor stairs: runner with taped sides and carpet rods. This carpet is different to all of the others and finishes at the top step. -1st floor landing, stairs from 1st to 2nd and 2nd floor landing in a dark grey carpet all the way to the edge as far as possible - better for hiding marks, wear etc. These areas don't 'normally' have runners. - All bedrooms except master are in a lighter grey. - Master bedroom in a slightly more luxurious carpet. I hope that helps a little. I really wouldn't worry about having different carpets on the stairs. The ground floor stairs are normally a little more elaborate as this is what you see on entering the house. Good luck with it all....See Moreminnie101
