Porch - 1930s detached house
Comments (10)Following because we'd like to replace the porch on our 1930s semi. It's difficult because ours originally had a storm porch with the front door recessed inside, but it has been moved to be flush with the front wall and a cheap porch stuck on front. We'd like to retain a closed in external porch for practical reasons, but it's difficult to make one look good when it wasn't part of the original design. I've looked around at other houses and I think the best looking porches stick with one third / two thirds proportions rather than having the line across the middle of the door. for example a brick wall for a third of the height and glass on top for two thirds. This would also give a good view of your original door inside...See MoreRe-model our 1930's detached house: can you help please?
Comments (8)To me the proportions of the windows don't look right. I don't think that the front face of the bay would've originally been one pane - I think there wouldn't been one or two vertical dividers. To improve the look of the house I would replace the windows with something that looks more in keeping. I would also re-render with a smooth render. I would either put the front door where the flat window is, or make more of an entrance of the for where it is. You don't say whether you use the driveway down the side of the house for a car. if not there are things you could do to make the existing entrance more appealing with a path, planters, etc....See MoreHelp with layout of 1930s house
Comments (14)No worries. It was blocked off before and we had to trapise through the whole house with shopping bags to get to the kitchen and it drove me mad. We didn't have side access then though so guess now I'd go through the new side door. I had sliding doors on the utility to save floor space but the family never shut them and it looks untidy so I'd make it a normal door. I have units to the right of the utility and I'd move these to the left side to avoid having to dog leg round them to get to the kitchen. Side door position was governed by drains and waste pipe position but if I'd been able I'd have moved it so it wasn't in the middle of the wall so I could have more of a run of units....See More1930’s detached - renovation ideas?
Comments (13)Have a read of this article which may help you determine the age. https://hmlandregistry.blog.gov.uk/2018/01/26/how-old-is-my-house/ I think you will need downpipes at the front of the house but they should be placed on corners and coming down directly from the bay window to be less intrusive. If it is Edwardian the guttering would have been cast iron, if it needs replacing consider a good quality aluminium moulded replacement which is far more aesthetically pleasing than pvc. Congratulations on your first house purchase and project, exciting times ahead! We have a similar Edwardian house which we fully renovated and extended 3 years ago so I remember the excitement and the feeling of wondering what to do with it!...See Morekaym10
