Design Dilemma Lighting Living Rooms

Which light(s) for my living room.

Help! I'm having a panic! I've arranged for the electrician to visit this Friday to hang all my light fittings. I'm in the last stages of finishing my full house renovation and thought I had everything sorted. I have now had a complete turn around on the living-dining room lights. We currently have flush chandeliers but I just do not think that they go at all. The ceiling is low and the room is always dark. It's painted a very light cream (Dulux Timeless and has an olive feature wall.) We have to marry my trad style sofa with modernist dining furniture as the dining room is now a play room. Any ideas on lighting please? Unfortunately there is a limited budget but I am the queen of research - show me what would work and I'll find it or something similar that is cost effective. If not, I have to keep what we have already bought. Help! PS. apologies for the photos - I took them to help aid my reseach for lights - only it's now gone 01.30 and any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Hi. How high are the ceilings? I think you need something at least 7ft off the floor but ideally more. The walls look pretty white. How about White and copper to go with the olive green and continue the airiness? Option 1 is from habitat, instead of the White light over the table you could go for a copper pendant. I must admit the room looks pretty light to me, the bookcase corner is a little dark but I assume a wall light is out of the question at this stage?! Maybe a floor lamp picking up more copper when you have the budget

Well it's great to have the comments. It's actually taken away my anxiety about the room and I can think clearly now. Sandra your advice about what makes you happy in a room made me smile.. you are right. You also confirmed my thoughts on a cast iron fireplace, it would be too imposing, and I think a wood burner would become a burden after a while as well as being a bit "cottagy," I have thought about a gas stove, a slightly more contemporary looking one in a rendered, painted recess, with a reclaimed surround, or open gas fire? I'd love to see your fireplace Sandra when you get the time to post a photo. Minnie, thank you for the link. The ideas are so good I do like the white fireplace, and the nod to the 1930's is good advice. I think now I will start to enjoy this renovation. I am going to try the tv in another area of the room, although my husband doesn't like them on the wall. It is a good idea on the wall near the alcove though, I need to have a good look at the room with fresh eyes. Love the idea of the curtains and slimline sofas. It's all great advice and Nicola thank you for your offer with information regarding the bay pole from Fabricant. I am based in the South East so I will be very interested when it comes to doing the curtains... which I think will be a long way off yet. I feel I'm getting somewhere now by eliminating the wood burner and the cast iron fireplace. I am so glad I posted on here! I'll be planning and researching this week end. Much appreciated.

Thank you Caroline. Deep blue seems to match with brown. But I also like the last picture. Is it grey tone or rather light blue? I think it is more airy then the deep blue.

Wow minnie - yes, yes, yes. I LOVE the idea of introducing copper!!!! Dark book case is going to auction, ceilings are low - just over 8ft but just can't get over the idea of copper!Now I'm panicing because the electrician is coming tomorrow!! (I only just found this response so please forgive the delay in responding.)

Oh no, sorry that's put you in a pickle now! If he's doing the whole house he may not mind popping back just to do this room as it really shouldn't take very long unless you were going for a complex chandelier. I think lights are so key to a room, it may be best to get something you really love (hope that doesn't that make it worse!). I'd give him a call and see what he says. Good luck!

Hi Sarah, thanks for the compliment. The table and chairs are vintage from the 60's.

I think we have a couple of lights that you might like - industrial vintage to match your dining furniture - a warm bulb can bring the warm glow you would otherwise get from your copper interior.
