I never understood why people don't build their conservatory for year round use. It's all about light and heat control. Automatic sun reflective shades along the roof windows will keep the room from overheating in the summer and even help keep it warm in the winter. Proper wall and ceiling insulation, double or gas permeated triple glazing will keep it comfortable year around with the right heating. Add a wee wood stove in a corner with a simply pipe chimney and you have yourself a lovely winter sun room to brighten your cold winter days. If you live where there is snow, even better. It'll feel like a wee slice of paradise.

Summer House/ Garden Room advice please

We’ve had a large summerhouse built and have been using it since Dec. It has a toilet and shower and sink for doing a little washing up. It’s being used as an office as well as a man games room. It’s about 70m from our house and the water supply and drainage was a must to gain maximum usage and also stop dirty children running through the house in the summer. We did have a water supply half way up from a previous installation. The drainage added cost, but the company we went with used a pumped system which needed much less digging and can be hidden in bushes. We have 2 wall heaters for heat, as we decided to save on the cost of under floor heating. The floor is very cold, slippers are a must - I’m not sure that underfloor would have been enough though. Friends of mine have a very posh shed with proper insulation, a massive TV for watching the football and a sofa that pulls double duty if people can’t easily get a taxi home. To me this is a brilliant addition to the house
