Colour for unit top
We asked a carpenter to build the long unit over 2 years ago, just before we moved in. He made such a mess and the quality of his work was so appalling, we fired him 3 days into the job - and used a white wardrobe door and some shelves to cover the (unfinished) top...
We now found a good carpenter and he's already making the drawers for this - in white, pretty similar with what we already have. We can have any colour top we want and, as hubby left the decision to me, I can't decide between white, black or grey. MDF painted in the walls' colour is also a possibility or oak like the floor, but I'm afraid we won't be able to match the shade and it would look worse. I'd appreciate your suggestions, as I'm quite unsure which would be best.

Comments (35)I'm in Northern Ireland and used Dee Light Furniture Facelifts NI. He has a Facebook page with lots of photos of his work showing lots of colours so its worth a look there. His standard of work is excellent and came highly recommended by word of mouth. He also builds this tear drop caravans to order! I promised photos of the finished room - it took a bit of time, as the shelves needed to be painted and after nagging hubby for a week to get to it, I just got a brush and did it myself!
What's missing is a plinth - the carpenter had a lot of trouble aligning all the drawers and then fitting the top - apparently, there's not one straight line on those walls, they're all deviating by a few good degrees from one end to the other (same with the floor). I wasn't sure what kind of shelves to have in the right alcove - in the end I opted for a small cupboard that mirrors (not very well) the wall on the other side and some slightly recessed shelves - that I painted in the wall colour.
Anyway, this is it (except for the plinth :)). I know the décor is a bit pretentious and overly staged, but I'll change it in time - that Klee print is going as soon as I manage to paint a couple of canvases for the space. Also, I can now use the space to display my wire&clay statuettes and change them as soon as I make new ones :))
