painting radiators

What is the best type of paint to use for new metal radiators? Should it be gloss/satinwood/emulsion? These are not designer rads and I dont want them to be highlighted in the pale cream they arrived in. I want to match the walls but don't think that the colour emulsion I am using is made in satinwood or gloss so I would need to find a colour that is similar if I need that type of paint.

I has to be specialist radiator paint due to the heat, this can be found alongside other paints.

I thought I'd update everyone as to what we settled on as most of you won't have seen the finished post. Went went for Little Greene French Pale Grey on the walls and then a Grey Quartz worktop which had worked quite well. To stop it from being clinical, we opted for some textured wallpaper in the dining area which is Bala Storm (I think) from John Lewis. We then added some natural tones using a wooden table, and then Vitra chairs. Along with wooden fruit bowl etc. The main window will have wooden venetian blinds, and the bay windows will probably be done in a darker grey material as the perfect fit style blinds you find in conservatories

Spray painting steel column radiators...

You can do it in theory, but it isn't an easy job as it is a column radiator it will be really hard to get an even coverage particularly between the sections and there will be a lot of surface area to cover. Also you will need a few cans of spray paint and the cost could end up creeping up (I know from experience!). For the radiator pictured above I would expect you would need an absolute minimum of 4 cans. Instead, have you thought about asking a car spray place to do it for you? We have had customers that have done this in the past. However, if you decide to do it yourself, we would recommend you lightly sand the radiator down with a fine sandpaper/wet and dry paper in order to key the surface. Then apply a thin primer layer and at least 2 thin layers of top coat. We would recommend using a cellulose or acrylic based spray paint or I have used Plasti-Kote in the past which you can buy from B&Q and I got a good finish. The key to a good finish is taking your time and doing very thin layers with at least 72 hours drying time between coats.

Thanks for the suggestion forzaitalia, but I don't think Roman blinds will work in this window for me because it's much wider than it is tall, so losing a bit of the top to the blinds would mean a weird bit of window on show, which I wouldn't like.
