Need help with our master bedroom

We've just bought a house and are doing room by room. Next up is the master bedroom. Behind the door to the right we're having built in cupboards installed. Bed will go against the wall to the front of the picture. Not sure what to do on the left in that space under the window or whether to have the shelves covered by cupboard doors.
Any guidance appreciated! Thanks.

I meant on the right of the wall under the window!

Hi I would create a balance to both sides by adding a unit to that side but make it deep enough to work as a bedside and then match this on the other side by extending the bottom of the bookshelf to match in depth of the other side giving you basically a matching pair of bedsides. you can the have bedside lamps with out interfering with the bookshelf and it will look great. if you need more storage then have the top two shelves of the bookcase with matching doors to the bedside ones. kr jaimie k

Hi David. An exciting new project you have there! Here are my initial thoughts: Living room: I would lose the warm tones and pattern, as I think this is what is making it feel dated for you, and introduce some grey and white, with possibly a touch of petrol blue. Shutter style blinds may be nice for your windows - you can get well designed yet affordable slatted blinds that resemble shutters these days. Again, I would stick to white and keep it fresh. I would build in a chimney breast for your TV, and how about a modern style log burner? Prints work well on cushions, so if you did want to re-introduce some pattern into a more modern setting, I would mix geometric printed cushions with simple plain ones to break them up. There are lots out there at the moment. If you wanted to keep the oak floors, you could look into sanding them back and grey-washing for a modern feel or indeed keep them oak. Just by sanding them back they will begin to feel a bit more modern. Note - oak changes colour over time, so if in direct sunlight it will start to go a warmer colour. Bedroom: Remove arch if you can, which would open the space up quite a bit. Perhaps the curtains could go and you could go for a fabric roman blind instead - this would soften the windows a little, yet still feel modern. Plain white waffle bedlinen is always a good move, and if you like a pop of colour, layer it with a throw and blanket, as well as three - four cushions, stacked in front of the pillows. This could introduce a little colour for you. If you stick to cooler colours, you could keep the oak floor if you wanted to, as it may balance out nicely. Can't quite see your pendant light in the shots, but perhaps white origami style pendants and lamps with soft glows would be nice. Keep it fresh, yet soft as this is the room you want to relax in. Greys and tonal colours work well in bedrooms. Not sure if you were planning on keeping your furniture or not, the black could work well for a modern setting, but if you were, you could look at white or grey gloss styles as options. Ok, this is a great space so easy to fix. People might give you specific advice but really it depends on your taste. There are 3 important things you are lacking that will fix your room - zoning, texture and lighting. zoning - if you can walk into a room and read it immediately it translate as boring. To fix this you need to draw the eye around the room. You can use furniture, art, points of interest to do this. Perhaps a cool chair outside the bathroom door or a chaise lounge. Perhaps a big banana plant or fiddle fig between your windows. Perhaps a huge piece of art above the bed. Perhaps some cool wallpaper art there (check out Curious Egg). A reading nook? How about filling that massive space between the end of your bed and wardrobes? You could put a huge pouffe, love seat or ottoman on a rug there so it looks a bit like a dressing room area with seating. Anthropologie do some great options. texture - you need a huge rug to go partially under your bed and soften the room. Try French connection home or la redoute for affordable options. Why not texturise the wall your bed is against. Do the whole wall or a textured headboard made of timber etc. Abigail ahern does some great, easy to assemble faux wall options. Again I would recommend plants. Not everyone likes these I need a bedroom but again Abigail ahern does some great fauxs. lighting - the room is very light and bright but at night it probably can look a bit stark or cold. I would definitely advocate some free standing lights. These should be near whatever zones you create. Certainly I would have some bedside lamps and maybe a taller freestanding lamp elsewhere. Rule of thumb in a room this size is at least 5 lamps or freestanding lighting units! finally, if you like neutrals and want to avoid colour, neutral colour through texture is a great solution. A beni oudain rug, a large sheepskin over the bottom of the bed, a large wicker chair. And of course, plants. good luck!

Minnie - The carpeting is just a light beige and the windows are, in my opinion, oddly placed. There is one on the east side set in the middle of the wall, and another on the south side that is offset (it's the longest wall) and sits within 2-feet of the ensuite. The room gets an abundance of light. We are having to keep the furnishings for now, though we are contemplating moving the wardrobe into one of the kids' rooms as our two eldest are off to uni (we'll replace to two singles and put a trundle into what is currently the boys' room for the girls to use when they come for visits). Lokaj - that blue with the paddle in the photo is gorgeous and far more along the lines of what I've been looking for. Thank you! Jen P - haha! At least it's not just me that scratches their heads at this. We're talking about putting flooring in the attic just to create additional storage so we can avoid stuffing everything to the brim.

Thank you Jamie. Great suggestion. Finding the bedrooms hard to visualise. Lounge was the first project and now that it's almost finished looking to our other rooms. Shall post once we've completed the bedroom (and bought a bed). Many thanks.
