Can I vault a ceiling with W rafters?

I have a bungalow 1980s build and would like to vault the main living space ceiling to make a kitchen & living room in one with a light and airy vaulted ceiling.
How easy is it to vault a ceiling with the std 1980s W trussed rafters, and what would be the likely cost?

Yes you can. Never cut or remove any timbers (including tie beams that run above the existing ceiling line) until you have spoken to an engineer. You will need to introduce steelwork in the same way as you do for a loft extension.

Elainer, This really would depend on the style of kitchen and the colours used in the space. Seamless cupboards for example can seem far less imposing when they are larger/taller and can give you all the storage you need. There are also lots of ways and types of cupboards you use that are very flexible and accessible. A modern contemporary kitchen is much easier to be able to achieve this but there are still things that can be done if it is a more traditional space. The amount of light that bounces around also makes a big difference as to how crowded a space can look and what colours are best to use. As suggested, a 3D render of the space would really help you see the overall effect and allow you to play around with the space. I offer a package for 3D's like this as I feel it is really important to be able to see and feel the space before you have any work done. Hi Julia, it's a bit difficult making suggestions from a distance without seeing and 'feeling' the space but you have several options... pendant lights are certainly one, as Pavilion Broadway has suggested. You could have several dotted around the space, even hanging them at different heights - which could be fun. Alternatively you could use LED strip lighting around the room - this gives a very modern look and of course could be used in conjunction with other types of lighting. The attractive vaulted ceiling means you will be looking up at it so you don't want to be blinded by spotlights pointing down and remember you'll occasionally need to change bulbs so whatever you install make sure it is accessible. Depending on how you decorate and furnish the room you could consider a variety of lighting that works from the floor upwards. I think we are too often stuck on the idea that lights have to come down from the ceiling. They don't. Hope that helps but will be happy to discuss further. Best wishes, it looks a super project. be careful you don't overload the circuit. nice idea having lots of bulbs but work out the amps / watts / volts on your ahem 'ring', I put that in quotes because most UK homes are indeed not 'ring' but in fact long spares connected by one 15 - 20 amp wire designed to run about 15 x 40watt bulbs. Consider a transformer running more low volt low amp options - like LEDs. there are plenty of types that match industrial retro bulb filaments. Also think about the safety of wiring. Most people don't realise that coiling wires and hanging things from metal can affect the current and earth regulations of 'lamps'. high current / fire / safe earthing eyebrows raising. The beauty of a bought option is it will probably have some form of certification and testing involved. We did something similar in an office and each tail connected on a single 12v transformer to an led bulb without an Inverter(cheaper longer lasting). Same effect much safer. It replaced the 'ever exploding bulb spider that was always making the dimmer switches melt option' that ran on 240v looked great, but wasn't really thought through.

Hi Jonathan, vaulted ceilings look fantastic but can be expensive to put in afterward, when you say one room, is it an external room to the house, ie sunroom? usually the existing trusses can be beefed up and steels used but hiding them to gets expensive, if it’s an external room to the house then removing the tiles and existing timbers, replacing in the needed sizes and retiling the roof (using the existing tiles) could work out less expensive. Vaulting an upstairs room room in a two story, I think could get expensive, possible extension of load bearing walls for steels and strengthening all the associated trusses....could be worth it though! im guessing some sort of pendant lighting, properly positioned would look better that spots?
