Hallway, Landing & Stairs - Help, please
Comments (9)Thank you for your ideas, minnie - I wish we could keep the wallpaper, as it is (or was) nice. Unfortunately, it is very 'tired' and looks dirty. We are definitely getting a carpet for the stairs, and unfortunately, we can't afford to put new wallpaper up, at the moment - we have enough magnolia paint (donated to us) to do the whole area, but I wanted to add a touch of soft colour to it. The carpet we are getting is very similar to the photo I have attached. As you have suggested, I have also attached a couple of photos of the hallway without the paint. Thank you again :D...See MoreHelp - Hallway, Stairs and Landing Ideas
Comments (29)If you like sage green, use sage green! The hall looks a little dark in places and all the wisdom from designers is that if it is dark, it is dark and no amount of bright colours will change it; they will look less bright in the dark - which equals dark. Go with it and use your favourite green or an even darker shade. Green is about to be very big; be ahead of the curve! It's also really hard to imagine it not being dark but as soon as you have some furniture in there, and some pictures or other things on the walls, it will look interesting and have a bit of a visual lift. Put up a couple of mirrors, too, to reflect the light which will make it seem lighter - you could have one on the right of the stairs so it reflects a little from the window and one on the wall in the main section near the front door. Have a bit of fun with it. It's where everyone arrives - cosy is very welcoming all year round....See MoreHelp: ideas for painting hallway and stairs/landing
Comments (3)I agree the grey-green colour is lovely, and it's quite restful so I don't think it would be too much if you wanted to do the whole lot in that colour. Also it would go very nicely with the parquet. However if you want to break it up, you could consider installing a dado rail and have colour under the dado and white/neutral above, or vice versa. You could even install panelling up to dado height. I don't know whether panelling or dado rails are strictly authentic for 1930s, you would have to check that, but I think it would look ok even if not authentic, as long as the style is simple. One more thought, are you going to carpet the stairs? (They look lovely bare but will be very noisy I imagine). If so I would advise choosing carpet first and then paint to go with the carpet - much easier than trying to match carpet to paint!...See MoreHELP PLEASE!! Landing, stairs, hallway decorating ideas
Comments (17)I have a hall way very similar to yours, when we moved in it was painted white. I presume the previous owner wanted to improve light levels. It had the reverse effect! It made the space seem gloomier which may be related to the front of the house being north facing, what direction does your house face as this may influence paint choices. I love colour but go neutral in a space like a hall way as it links all the rooms in the house and in Victorian houses is very difficult to decorate, ceiling heights etc. We used Farrow and Balls London stone as it remained a true neutral,,many other beige/greige had pink/ purple tones which showed in artificial light. I agree with the other comments about stripping the doors particularly if you do decide on white, it will provide contrast and warmth. You could paint a darker colour beneath the dado rail. I would suggest careful placement of mirrors to maximise/ steal light from other rooms. Also pictures with glass bring light to the area too. You could mount pictures on the stair case in line with the treads. I agree with the earlier comment about mounts and frames. I would go for a runner to show off your lovely stair case. Does the door to your kitchen/diner have a glass panel (s) in it, if not I would suggest adding one or two depending on the type of original door you have that will pull light in from that room. Good lighting will help too, it all depends on your personal preference, you could have pendants downstairs and spotlights upstairs. Good luck with it and hope you enjoy the process...See Moreska1990
