Us little hairless monkeys (humans) are constantly modifying and exerting change on our environment. While I appreciate the spirit of "accepting Nature's intention" the fact is that we've already decided against that by not living naked in a cave and hunting and gathering our sustenance. I've been doing this long enough that I have seen evidence of the following: folks who isolate themselves from their yards, and by extension nature, really don't care about it. Those who do spend time outdoors, begin to care even in small ways. We get people to care about plants and then the larger environment by drawing them outdoors and allowing them to fall in love. If this means using an iffy material to create a space that causes them to spend time in the yard, is it worth it if they then take one more step towards being a good steward of the earth than they would have previously? I would argue that yes, it's worth it. I'm a plant nerd who grew up playing in the swamps of New England, imagining I was Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion (again, NERD). I will happily poke around in the weed-infested, mucky, neglected corner of my backyard. But to draw my wife out there I have to create a more human space. And the longer she spends out there, the more she buys into my plant collection and some of my other weirdness. Perfect sustainability is a noble goal but really impractical for most. More importantly, I think it creates a chasm between people and nature. If they're surrounded by nature every day, they're a lot more likely to fight to preserve it everywhere.

Yes, definitely. When we moved into our house we had no idea that a) we would be living in it so long, or that b) my husband would have a stroke and I would have degenerative spinal disease. Now just managing, but seriously looking at all options.

Just wanted to say that this is a very interesting discussion. @1111x you know your own tastes in decor and it’s well presented. Others will always have their own opinions. I think we’re polar opposites as i‘m nearly always living amongst clutter...mostly hubby’s computer and brewing equipment (drives me crazy) but so long as it’s clean and comfortable I’m happy. Do houses or people leave an energy or aura....no idea, but possibly as I’ve heard many circumstances of it. The feng shui thing I find interesting. From your photos I noticed a couple of things. By the dining table you have a small window but grand curtains that are sort of framing the radiator, kind of makes you focus on what is a bland (yet necessary) object. Then others have picked up on the mirrored tv cabinet, it’s a lovely cabinet but I’m not sure I’d want to be staring at my knobbly knees and ankles when I’m watching tv 🤣. No idea if things like that are feng shui faux pars, would be interesting to research further but by all means ignore me if you like things as they are. Good shout on the humidity, we tend to leave windows open upstairs throughout the day as we find it really helps with the airflow not to mention the heat from 3 computers running at full pelt every day. I’m not very good at flows etc but I do wonder whether you might be a bit short on worktop space? There’s a long run of tall units, but not much worktop area that I can see. I’m not a fan of hobs on islands, but I know they are popular. I think I would try to find a way to incorporate the Christmas lounge with the rest of the house, maybe glazed doors in place of the wall to improve lighting and give the option of closing off if need be. With the dining table so close to the island, do you need both? But there are others on here who have much more insight than I do on these matters. Have fun planning. Angie
