Storage ideas advice
Comments (3)Hi Josie this is a quick reaction as havent had much time to think,, but for starters the wall next to one with poster on needs using as you say and although corner design sounds good , Im wondering if you would get more out of that space by going floor to ceiling with a fitted unit flat against that wall , not very deep say at a guess without being there,,400mm deep by say 600 wide ,,,(I know you have to access the bed so maybe this wont work but...) ... and leaving an open box shelf within this tall unit for Tv .The rest being cupboards with touch close doors for max storage and no handles.. You could colour block that open bit by painting say soft grey as a feature. That feature could be repeated in a bookshelf elsewhere for example ( We have aspbergers in wider family and understand a little about reducing anxiety from viusual overload.) You could get the makings of that unit in Ikea. otherwise custombuild. Im sure you dont want to rethink your bed purchase but combination storage beds are so varied now ,, finding the right one could be a real investment in the circumstances. Things like ladder position, desk position and clothes storage, will all make a lot of difference as you are well aware already. If your son helps choose it would ensure he feels at home with it. Just make sure your measurements are spot on if you are looking . I can see a few mm could be crucial if it doesnt fit. Im finding it hard to make out the real position of the end of the bed and the "jutting out " bit of wall, A rough floor plan with measurements in cm or mm would help . Having worked in kitchen and bedroom design I must say you do have a challenge here josiewosie woo1,,sorry nearly forgot the woo... But theres always a solution !! Apologies this is a not more comprehensive an answer but do see your dilemma here and the reason why you need throw it around. Your ideal answer is really a good local,' design concious' carpenter/handyman who would refit room from scratch. ( I do have one at home but unfortunately hes not available right now Sorry....) All the best with your plans....See MoreFirst house ideas and advice
Comments (35)Hi everyone. We are now progressing with the house bur need some help / advice. We have decided to take down most of the wall between the dining room and kitchen & build an island that will sit half in the kitchen and the other half in the dining room. (See plan). In the dining room we decided, instead of a formal dining table, we would place a log /bench type table (the kind you get in a pub outside or in a canteen) - right in the corner where by the wall between the lounge & dining room (where they meet the corner or bedroom 4 as in the plan). The table could be a great idea for a more formal meal as it would be for to sit more socially. But we want to use a storage bench / box (maybe an Ottoman style) along the walls with plenty of cushions to sit on / against the wall. This type of seating would continue across both walls in the corner, skip past the opening (leading to the shower / bedroom 4) and continue on into the corner where the dining room & kitchen meet (in front of the shower room). So it looks sort of like this (more like the second picture with the brown table) So it looks sort of like this (more like the second picture with the brown table). We love the type of seating / cushions in the first picture (white & blue). Since we do not know where we can buy such tyoe of seating. We thought we could, perhaps, recreate it by buying some wooden storage benches / boxes and add plenty of cushions on them to make them more comfortable to sit / lounge on. Not sure if our ideas are cominf across in my posts but in case you do understand. Does anyone have any suggestions / ideas?...See MoreIdeas/advice for modern garden
Comments (11)I'm hoping to get the walls in ASAP, just struggling with the footings currently as the ground is about 90% stones and bibbles! The only good thing is that this is making the ground really stable. The bricklayer is going to ensure weep holes are built into the wall and there will be channel drainage installed when i know how the garden is going to look. Really need to get it designed so i know where i am going with it. I have found a designer a mere 9 miles away so just waiting for her to come back to me :-). I do like the gabion baskets but will steal too much of my garden unless i choose a gabion-effect section once the retaining wall is in....See MorePatio advice and ideas please
Comments (39)@rach1922 - you are quite right that people harvesting Indian sandstone were exploited, as well as the use of child labour. For this very reason many UK suppliers have installed their own staff in their own quarries to ensure this does not happen. So basically there are companies who have total control to ensure the Stone is ethically harvested, such as Marshall’s, London Stone etc. I used Global Stone who supply many builders merchants. Sadly, we as a society exploit many people in many countries so that we can enjoy cheap clothing etc. It’s a minefield....See Moreembzop
