We are just re-fitting our kitchen and was wondering if I could use Ma

To be honest I forgot about paining the walls and we have a ton of white Matt. The units will be gloss white and the work tops black stone. All paint is away from the cooking areas as we have glass splash backs. So can we use Matt emulsion or does it really have to be kitchen and bathroom paint. We are short on time too so Matt is easier but don't want to have to re-do it once the units are in. Any painters out there with some advice? Much appreciated.

Oops sorry about the typos! I should have re-read before posting. We want to use white matt emulsion, especially to cover those horrid orange walls.

Use it as a first coat by all means but your new kitchen will look more stricking if it is framed with a different colour

Wow yes lots to waken up to and I'm so grateful for the help! Thanks so much! I tried mforr to find one o those room colouring things for a shop here in the uk and whilt you can do it with dulux paint brand, it didnt seem to like my iPad so need to get onto it on my laptop! Having slept on it I'm thinking I like the idea of doing the kitchen only in colour, and then having highlights of the colour in the LR with cushions perhaps. We considered curtains too but I'm not sure if it would crowd the LR. We are sure that the coffee table is too big also, but I love it (it has a glass top and we can present things in the drawer below). We also have no dining table so this is our only space for setting out food! I'm still liking the green, but the yellow goes well too. We have a tea/coffee jars on our kitchen work top (might be just visible in the pictures) which are green yellow and grey, so if I bring these along to the DIY shop they could colour match those for me. (Along with the list you sent me too mforr!) I will def be back on to show you all the results!! :)

Hi there, It's a lovely space and I am sure there are lots of options as mentioned already by Karen above. How would you like to use the island? Is it more for the aesthetic or do you want it for people to sit / perch at? Islands tend to lose a lot of storage if you want people to be able to sit at them, which necessitates the need for more wall cabinets etc but if you can use the 'back side' for more occasional items then the wall restrictions may be less of an issue. What sort of style are you thinking of going for? Open shelves can look fabulous and a great way of storing items that are used day in, day out. They can also be very budget friendly in comparison to wall cabinets. Have you considered banquette seating for the table, opposed to using all chairs? It tends to be quite space saving and quite versatile too. Best wishes Claire

Thanks for your advice both of you. We live in England to answer your question Gabby. Is there a rule in Scotland that the aisles have to be 120cm and if so why ? Jonathan, I was kind of thinking we would want to use the island for eating meals on like we do now with our current kitchen table, but I guess if the DR is open to the kitchen then it wouldn't be a problem to take a few steps more to the dining room table (because we use it so infrequently at the moment I am finding that hard to visualise). I am going to post a better plan of our current kitchen and dining room (with the pantry taken out) and I am also going to post a photo looking out from the window in our dining room. I am wondering if we did turn the DR into our kitchen could we make the window ledge higher and put the units in an L-shape so we could put the sink in the window? (and still have space for an island) I know this goes against some of my earlier points, especially about being worried people would be able to look in at us/and would create a more goldfish bowl feeling but I am just playing around with ideas.

I would avoid an island, given the space available, but in the past, where we had insufficient room for a fixed island we had a butcher’s block as an alternative and this worked really well. In fact, I loved the butcher’s block so much it moved with us to our current house. It is a bit lower than standard worktop height so is great for all sorts of food prep.

Choose a colour that you have used elsewhere in the house- you know you like it and it adds consistency when rooms share the same colour palette

what to remember is the bathroom and kitchen areas can be a steamy,by using normal matt paint, if you have condensation running down the walls it does leave water stain mark, then when you go to wipe it ,oops, you will see where it has been wiped,

if you want a finish, use dulux indurance range, or dulux kitchen and bathroom paint, or simple silk paint does the job these paint ranges are able wiped clean
