Width of this kitchen

Hi there, would love to know the overall width of this kitchen as we have a galley style kitchen we need to refurbish and I love this one. My husband says this kitchen is much wider than ours - ours is 2.5m wide. Can you put me out of my misery please? And would you also tell me the width of your patio doors? Thanks and regards, Helena

Hi Helena, your husband is correct to a degree, sorry to disappoint. The kitchen is generally 2.8m wide but 3.3m where the sink is positioned in the bay window. With 2.5m I would suggest you have a run of full depth units with 700mm wide worktop, on the opposite wall a storage wall floor to ceiling of units 400mm deep. This gives you lots of useful storage space that isn't too deep, effectively what we did with the kitchen in the pictures. You would then have 1.4m wide circulation space, wide enough to allow two people to pass comfortably. The patio doors are 1.8m wide. I hope this helps. Sara

Thanks for your reply. We want to put patio doors at the end of our kitchen and our willing to sacrifice some cupboard space. We also don't need a seating area as big as yours - just two bar stools and a very small peninsular arrangement with wider worktop overhang would suffice. I will have a play around with everything. Our kitchen may not be as wide but your layout has inspired me. Many thanks.

hi ! just a quick question or two ... which way does this extension face N,E,S, or W? what kind of roof are you thinking of? if you had 2/3rd width would that leave you a courtyard that still gets the sunshine ? morning or evening ? ..... 2/3 looks great on projects I have seen, especially if the remaining outside space is used as an eating or terrace type area - often in south facing gardens, this set up as you have it, would mean an evening suntrap - ideal for alfresco suppers! ...if you went full width - is there scope to put an access door to the laundry/ mudroom on the right hand side ? or is that a party wall ? having no window would be a deal breaker for me ( I do the laundry in our household !) Designing a kitchen to suit the space before you choose the external doors/ windows may be an idea to run with, as that way you can design without compromise - if you have the time to do it this way i would definitely recommend it ! That's some nice ideas, thank you all! I'm especially liking Jonathan's repositioning of sofa and L-shaped kitchen. An additional question: how do i deal with tall cabinets in the L-shaped option? there will be some pipes running in left upper corner, so that might be the best place to put them, but tall corner cabinets are a bit of a space waste, i feel, don't you agree? @strawberry47 good thinking, still need to put some thought into that. Keen on having a built in oven that's place higher up, but need to find a good spot for it. If that doesn't work out, the standard below stove oven will do just fine.

Hi Thanks for the post! the good thing is that you have a nice squarespace with entrance almost in the middle! of the house, it is a good size entrance worth keeping it, The drawback is the kitchen being to the front of the house rather than the rear, Would suggest why not swap them round change kitchen to where the utility is and change the kitchen area to formal dining? Take down the utility/dining and dining/drawing room walls have open plan? and maybe dining room and drawing room can share bifold doors, But having rear extension say the full width of the house and 3 meters towards the rear would resolve a lot of compromise as an option. Hi Brona, You've got a decent sized kitchen so probably a logical layout based on how you as a family use your space could solve everything. It sounds to me like you need a large pantry block where you can store all of your worktop appliances out of sight but within easy reach. This will then free up usable prep space rather than the lots of top but no space that you have now! it's about zoning your areas so everything you need for a particular activity is in the right place so you're not running all over the kitchen getting your 10k steps just cooking supper!
