Moving gas and electric meters

We are about to build an extension on our home and majorly renovate the kitchen. Currently the gas and electric meters are in the kitchen and I'd like to relocate them outside. Does anyone know how you go about this and an idea of costs involved? Many thanks

I had my gas and electricity meters moved in September 2013. How much it costs will depend on how and where you are moving them to.
Gas meter - I went to www.SGN.co.uk. They move the whole gas pipe from where it joins the main pipe in the road, to the property and the new meter location. Therefore even if you are moving the gas meter from inside the wall, to directly outside the same wall, they won't move the pipe that short distance. Instead they install a whole new pipe to the property (well they did in my house). Cost about £1300.
Electricity meter - this was cheaper because they could just change the location of the meter without installing a new cable. However, there are rules about where a fuse box is located and how far it can be away from the meter. If it is installed more than 3 meters away, they have to use more expensive cabling. You have to have 2 electricians. One installs the new meter and the other links it to the fusebox. I think the meter installation cost about £350.
The cost will vary alot depending how complicated the move is.

We've just had a quote to move our gas meter the distance of about a meter but onto a different wall. We've been given two options - just under £700 for complete work done or just under £600 if we want to risk doing the prep work ourselves & dig down to the gas line.
We had a lot of trouble getting someone in to do the quote & were passed back & forth between our energy provider & Wales & west who serve our part of the country. Your energy provider should be able to provide a phone number to contact initially.

Firstly, I wouldn't say it's too tall. It's too narrow. I don't think you're going to be able to avoid it sticking out further than the window. Really. I would have a cupboard built to cover the whole width of the alcove; to match the one you have the other side maybe. I can't tell from the pic what window dressing you have, but you could soften the edge with curtains.

Hi Keswing, I had exactly the same problem with my hubby!!! Haha! The great thing with concept planners is they will pass their trade discounts onto you! We actually used Gina from Create Perfect on here (but she does exactly the same as OnePlan) who I would highly recommend and the fab thing was that even after her fees it saved us money because she passed on all the trade discounts! I highly recommend getting in touch with OnePlan and Create Perfect and getting quotes from both of them. If you ask them both to send you the list of companies they get trade discount with then you can show that to your hubby and knowing you're in the market for some serious spending on a kitchen and presumably a bit of new furniture then you'll be able to show it's cost neutral! :) We saved over £1,500 in our kitchen alone through Create Perfect getting us discounts with our chosen suppliers (probably worth noting that it doesn't limit your choices as the kitchen company we chose from her concept plan she'd never dealt with before but she set up a trade account just for us, the same for our underfloor heating and actual floor) Hope it helps and good luck!

Firstly, as Rose says, it's not a meter a box. It's a consumer unit. You don't need any of the utility companies to move it, just a qualified electrician. Depending on the wall, you may be able to bury the cables in it, however, I suspect there is a reason why they are all wall mounted. It could possibly be moved down the wall and therefore, you could put a cupboard just at the bottom so that you wouldn't block the light at the top. I think you need an electrician round to find out why the cables are wall mounted in the first instance. I'm guessing it's an older house and that's a new upgrade, retro fitted box as part of a re-wire. I notice that you have pipes running along the bottom of the wall also, so that would have been when central heating was retro- fitted too. You could move the box to the window wall and have units under the window, which then cover the box and the pipes.

I was thinking about a faux chest of drawers - an upcycled chest of drawers, with non functioning drawers, with the back taken out. If the unit was tall enough you could retain one functioning drawer at the top.

Moving gas meter isn't always so expensive, we moved ours from internal to external. The quote was less than £500, and it was a fixed price.

When they turned up they told us we needed a new pipe from the street to our new meter box and needed our builder to dig it up. I refused as I would have had to pay my builder to do that, and it was right across the roots of a tree with a TPO.

They reluctantly dug a hole in the street (their cost) and re-sleeved the pipe instead. The crew were reluctant to do anything to be honest, got very funny about digging their own hole, as it was so dangerous and could cave in on them...it was about 70cm deep in the end, and the soil/gravel below ground was perfectly stable and no risk to anyone. My builder was appalled at their attitude.

It is a bit of a nightmare to co-ordinate the gas network guys and the energy supplier, to replace the meter...and then our current energy supplier still has the old meter reference...kind or wish we hadn't bothered (over 18 months later!)
