Please help me with colours to brighten up my dark brown boring lookin

My living room has white walls and I have cream curtains and cream carpet. I have 2 dark brown sofas (a 2 seater and a 3 seater) arranged in an L-shaped arrangement. I have cream cushions with a touch of burnt red. This looks boring and colourless. I am not sure of how to add colour and what colours to add. I thought of getting a large patterned cream and red area rug, a large red or orange wall art and a burnt orange floor flower vase. Please give your suggestions. thanks in advance.

Hi,

A hot or raspberry pink would really lift the colour.
Or, a rich cobalt blue or even turquoise works with brown

You've got a neutral base there so tons of colours would work.

You could paint the walls - either go for a feature wall with something bold like a teal or olive green, or paint all the walls something paler like duck egg or apple green for example. Or you could add pattern and colour with wallpaper.

Pull a palette together of 3 colours to add visual interest. Work on a 60%, 30% and 10% rule for the different colours. For example: 60% neutral, 30% would be accent colour 1 (so paint a wall or bring in wallpaper or add a big rug, some cushions and art), 10% is accent colour 2 which could be a few cushions and decorative bits.

Hi Johnleh, I've just read through your request and I think I can give you some advice! I like the idea of the purple and the paint you have chosen, but how about trying mushroom coloured curtains? If you got them in a good quality, thick material they would look really smart and also complement the fig paint. If it is an option, wooden flooring could work really well - it's what most trendy flats have and it also has a grown up apartment look. I would also suggest adding a free standing plant in one of the corners - this will brighten the room and introduce another colour. You can get a reasonably priced one of these (plus a simple pot to put it in) from places like homebase: https://goo.gl/NCpNsC. Oak furniture would also look great - to tie in with the style of the property, you could even get some in a 1950s style (or good quality vintage) - it's right on trend at the moment. Wait until you've got the rug. It might be a bit too much fluffiness, and I'm a woman ;-) I think I would personally go for something a bit more understated. And do you have enough space for it? Thank you everyone so far. I decided to call the hotel again as so many suggestions by you all i git lost again, and they were more helpful this time and managed to get me ‘some’ extra info that it is a blended real white that has a teeny tiny real grey (whatever that means) with teeny tiny red (in the rooms with a red curtain) but a tinier green tint (in the rooms with a dark grey curtain) but no blue at all in the tint in any of the rooms. Wow, that seems like a bit of a crazy blend and I didnt realise its 2 differnt blends depending on which curtains they use, but it does point to what some of you suggested :) seems i like the one with the red curtain better :)

I think I would try tweaking the layout slightly. Try the sofa flat in the middle of that wall and paint the radiator in the wall colour. Angle one chair in the corner of the room facing the sofa, move the other along and put the smaller table under the other with the lamp on (Art would need to move slightly). I think a tall plant always adds life to a room (other side of sofa to what's shown). I'm not sure if I'm right in saying you don't like the wallpaper? If you don't you could look at Cole and son cow parsley, it comes in a warmish grey Which might be worth trying. If you like that one can look for cushions and a rug to complement. Would you consider a coffee table or larger footstool for the room? Something round could work. Is the inside of the fire just plastered?

Don't forget to add pattern as well as colour and you can mix patterns.
