Advice needed: stairs - is carpet on stairs the only option?

I am moving to a new home in 3 months time and decided to entrust my brother in law to do all the flooring for me. I have a concept for most of the rooms and am going for wooden floors and tiles in kitchen and wet rooms. My only concern is what to do with stairs?? Don't want carpet on it but what else can i lay on stairs in my new 3 storey town house?Any ideas?

Ditto! Lol. Carpet is much quieter and safer (I've slid down my previous 'all wooden' steps before now!) but I hate it too.
If you have good treads, I'd go for a stylish runner which looks nicer. Get a busy pattern ie stripes or funky geometries to keep the dirt less obvious.

Sisal is impossible to clean and the dirt falls through it, so it's not very hygienic. I would recommend replacing it with a carpet made of olefin or nylon. A fibre that has the colour in the solution it's made of will not absorb stains and will be easily cleanable. I think you'll be happy with it because it will be quiet and luxurious and will clean up with a quick vacuum most of the time.

Hi Maggie. We are doing the same but have been fortunate enough to have an interior designer friend who has given us great advice: - Ground to 1st floor stairs: runner with taped sides and carpet rods. This carpet is different to all of the others and finishes at the top step. -1st floor landing, stairs from 1st to 2nd and 2nd floor landing in a dark grey carpet all the way to the edge as far as possible - better for hiding marks, wear etc. These areas don't 'normally' have runners. - All bedrooms except master are in a lighter grey. - Master bedroom in a slightly more luxurious carpet. I hope that helps a little. I really wouldn't worry about having different carpets on the stairs. The ground floor stairs are normally a little more elaborate as this is what you see on entering the house. Good luck with it all.

Hi Matt, do you have a budget in mind? I can't quite see what's at the bottom of the steps, but I would be tempted to consider building bespoke storage. Not sure what's on the other side of the room, but option 1 could be splitting the cupboard in half - so you would access the under stairs storage from the other side by creating a new opening under the stairs, then have a full height cupboard but half depth from the current door opening. If that's not feasible, maybe building in some bespoke storage E.g. directly opposite the door, full unit from top to bottom, I would put a clothes rail for coats in the top half of the cabinet (perhaps with a fabric shoe shelf hanging to one side), then some doors in the bottom half for vacuum/buckets/etc. You can hang hooks on walls for mops/ironing boards/etc. If you need to gain a bit more wall space for hooks, perhaps you could have the door opening the other way around, or if that wouldn't work, replace it with a folding door? If that's all outside of budget, then you could use wall hanging storage solutions, or over door solutions as per photo.

Carrie - thank you so much for that comment. I really appreciate you resting out the temperature of your own floor for me! And for getting the noise thing, hate anything that is going to cause a racket! But I think between you and the other Houzzers on this discussion, I have had some myths busted about tiled floors. Only my own myths though I think! Thank you for the tips about the underneath of the floor too. That will really help. Thanks, I love the hallway and have been living with it as a mess for so long, it will be so nice to finally decorate it - I will try to dig out a before picture as have now had it plastered and rewired and mist coat of paint has gone on. Lots of woodwork to do now, door trims and skirting to go on and bannister to sand, then the tonne of final paint and can get to flooring after that. But we’ll get there!
